Holding zero / re-zeroing

Searched and found nothing on point.

When you think of reasonable expectation of a scope holding zero, how much is too much adjustment to suggest you scope isn't holding zero?

With my NF NXS, I sometimes have to adjust 3-4 clicks windage and / or elevation. And sometimes its dead on - no adjustment / re-zeroing

Is the need for re-zeroing due to enviromentals, rifle handling, or some other cause?

Yes, yes and ???? I shoot at two matches that depending on environmental's, my sight in and 1st target shots can be 1-2 clicks high or low depending on temp, pressure, etc.....but we can have 10° to 20° temp. change in 2 hrs. Gun handling does affect shot placement, and poi . I just started using an almost total free recoil technique because I couldn't get consistent, repeatable hits......Start keeping a log with details on weather, hold, etc and see if it shows a consistent shot placement , given the same conditions....wish I could help more, but I'm still learning every time I squeeze the go button...rsbhunter

how is it mounted
i only own 9 night force scopes so not much to go on

Not following how that anything has to do with how much re-zeroing is too much....

I'll just assume you know what youa redoing, if you'll just tell me how much you have to adjust on a re-zero....

MPA chassis. Free floated. Just re-checked the torque on the action screws.

Last 2 times out, no movement in scope, so no re-zero needed. But I have sometimes needed to with this gun.

I have to re zero 1-2 clicks quiet often between wind and Florida wind and temp changes. Starting at 8am have to move a couple of clicks (some times) then as the morning goes on I some times have to change back.

HAVE YOU TRIED SHOOTING two groups in the am with a cold clean bbl ?
shoot a 3 shot group then a 5 shot group
maybe just needs fouling or cold clean is not the same as a fouled bore

You mention 100yds and paper.
3 to 4 clicks (0.1mil per click?) probably isn't temperature or pressure changes.
Change from 60F to 90F or 27 to 30 inhg or wind up to 5 mph is likely 0.1 mil or less change in windage or elevation.
Change in velocity of 50fps is also likely less than 0.1 mil.

Just think what 3 to 4 clicks would be at 600 yards. Wind reading would be a factor but not @ 100yds.

Lots of variables here. How accurate is the rifle? How accurate are you? Can you and the rifle consistantly shoot 1/4 inch groups if the scope is not touched? Does the scope move the correct amount?

Same here.

Might be shooting at 8am as the sun's just lighting up the range, but might shoot for 2-3hrs. And during that time, it might get 20ºF warmer, and/or 15-20% less humidity. Often have to adjust a click or two, depending.

My gun....me... my load....my scope... ALL IRRELEVANT.

I'm going on the assumption YOU are an excellent shooter, with a very consistent scope, with a great load...and then asking .... what is YOUR needed adjustment?

I'm not asking about me / my gun. I'm asking about your gun / scope.

Me, my gun, and my Athlon scope.
Set zero at my 100 yard local range, dial in 12 MOA, X or Ten first shot @ 600 at the end of the month.
Seldom have to use all 5 sighters. Sort of scary to start score after 2 shots.
Some warmer months have to start @ 11.75 MOA.
I do get some 9's, but not because of zero shift.
I don't ever remember having to move a previous set zero a whole MOA (4 clicks) @ 100 yards.
Not even with a Banner 3-18

I'll say it again. Conditions might make a click @ 100 yards.
4 clicks in windage might be needed @100 yards in a 20mph 90 degree wind that you didn't notice and hold for.

Try this.
Shoot a group @ 100 yards. Zero the scope. Remove scope and remount.
Shoot another group. c
Good mount and rings should return to 0.1 or 0.2 mils.
If it don't it's a mount/scope issue.

Most of the answers given are trying to help find possible reasons for as you put it," sometimes I have to dial 3-4 clicks up or down ". Which by inference, suggests you where looking for an answer to that statement.... So when you say , I only want to know how much you have to adjust " your" zero....maybe I misread your original post?rsbhunter

Wasn't trying to stir the pot.....I read his original post and honestly thought he was wanting to know if other shooters had to adjust or rezero every time they shot? It seemed that alot of the responses were met with, that's not what I'm asking kind of answers...? I have found on this forum that the answers you recieve vary from, you're doing it wrong, to a guy that wants to go to any length to help you figure something out. In my original post, I tried to relate that each time I shoot a match, it's a 50/50 chance I will have to adjust for elevation....sometimes even after sighting in, and an hour later when the match starts....so look at his response to my post, I thought I had made it fairly easy to understand that rezeroing is a variable.....didn't mean to be contrary or start a sideshow.....rsbhunter
