Holding a barrel in a 4 jaw

Copper is soft and can move. I guess it's a matter of preference, do what works for you. I just find a chuck with jaws set up for a pivot point is a lot easier to deal with than a copper ring, a bunch of shims, etc. A lot easier to set up and dial in if there is just a chuck+barrel vs chuck+barrel+a bunch of shims

Any opinions on this setup? I wouldn't be opposed to having a dedicated chuck or set of jaws set up like this.

I forget where I saw that- but those are EDM'd into the chuck jaws.
Great idea, just not cheap to do it.

I've got no complaints with the gimbaling V-block setup, everything moves freely as it should.
When I adjust one axis of the outboard spider screws, the breech moves exactly how I expect.

A surface grinder is what id use if i wanted to do that to a chuck

The chuck photo I shared with the brass inserts in from an Area419 chambering video for what it's worth.

After spending a day with Mike Bryant I converted to his workholding scheme on set thru chucks. He uses split steel rings while I use aluminum ones. Have a collection; they are made to fit different sizes. Outboard still have the finger clamps with ball bearings, I have since upgraded the bolts to 12 points. Much easier to adjust than Allen head ones.

I like the split ring idea. I'm going to give it a try. I have a Buck 6 jaw that I love but I'm not sold on using it for barrels. Adjusting is kind of an art that I dont quite have yet. I like the 12 point bolts instead of set screws for sure.

It's truly a work of art. I hate using it because it's just so nice to the touch and to the eyes.

Bison set thru chucks are nice (almost as nice as the German made Rohm...lol.. cheers) Here is one in my 30+ yo 1236 lathe, a 3J set thru. The 3J set thru is a utility one, jaws close much smaller than the 6J for other projects besides barrels

The pivot just allows the v block to follow the barrel contour. Just use a copper ring...pick them up at Lowe's or home Depot...
Do you have any other info on these copper rings-----have never
seen such while prowling the electrical dept.

I use short copper stubs but the rings sound interesting

I don't think it literally means "copper rings from HD or Lowe's". Most use 4 gauge ground wire and form it into a ring. Go buy a foot or two from Home Depot or Lowe's. It's not hard to wrap a few wraps around a barrel shank or piece of stock and slit the wraps into rings with a hacksaw.
