Hit me with some good moly removal methods

Picked up a varmint rifle package that came with a custom barreled rifle, brass, loaded ammo, dies, etc. Got the deal of the century on it so I couldnt pass it up. Anyhow, the old fella seemed to have a thing for moly...so much so that he even went as far as to coat his BRASS in moly ??? He said he did it to get a "smooth bolt throw" ::)

I hate moly. I could care less about the Vmax bullets he coated in the loaded ammo because im just gonna pull those and junk em. But i would like to get the moly off the brass. I have a tumbler and all that, just wondering about a good solution to soak the brass in or to throw in the tumbler with them. Thanks.

NOPE. I ran some brass in the tumbler all night with walnut media and it barely removed any of the moly on them. That method alone doesnt work very well at all.

Wow... moly'd brass... good way to kill your bolt lugs from the reduced case grip on chamber walls.

Anyway - try soaking those cases first in 50/50 white vinegar & water solution for 2 or 3 hours first, then tumble as before. Acetic acid won't hurt the brass as long as no other metals are in there at the same time. I've done this with coated bullets & it works great.

If you're still unhappy after that I'd look to the SS media case cleaning method next. If that doesn't work I'd trash 'em rather than risk excessive bolt pressures from too-slippery cases.

You can soak them in Kroil for a couple of days to loosen the coating, then tumble in media to remove it. Barkeepers Friend mixed with water and tumbled also works well ;)

This just adds to the growing list of reasons i cant hardly bear to buy used guns. I learn a new way to mess up a perfectly good action every day it seems. Had a seemingly new bat come in, hard to open bolt on fired round. The previous newfound pipefitter decided to true a brand new bat- now the headspace is off .012 on one side of the boltface and .017 on the other side of just a 308 boltface. Now the customer gets to buy a new bolt and never be able to use a std bat barrel again because the threads were recut. And i figure itll go up for sale someday.

Yeah some things folks do amazes me. Cant imagine where in the heck someone would think moly coating brass was a good idea???

The rifle is a Stainless Ruger M77/22 with a nice brown laminate stock and a Lilja 20 cal 3 groove barrel chambered in 20 Ackley Hornet and a nice side/top ported muzzle brake. The rifle came with a Redding custom die set, about 100 fireformed brass, and 100 loaded rounds ALL completely covered in moly.

To add to my bewilderment, the fella said he didnt get it to shoot very well, but only tried ONE powder, ONE primer, and ONE bullet. It was Lil' Gun with the 32gr V-Max and whatever primer. Now get this...he said it wasnt shooting as good as he wanted, yet loaded up 100 rounds!!! Who does that with a load they know doesnt shoot good???

Anyhow, I know ill be able to get it shooting after i put it through the paces. Despite all this trouble with moly, i bought the entire package for only $425! For that price on a rifle package like this, i am willing to put up with a little headache :)

Sounds like a whole lotta work to save 200 Hornet cases. :o

I'd simply trash them, buy more, and start over.

Nope. Ill figure it out. I dont throw away any good components. Just gotta clean em.

For what I paid, I figure the brass/ammo, dies, muzzle brake, and barreled action with stock were basically free cuz you cant even buy a Lilja blank and chamber it up for the price I paid.

Put them in an ultrasonic cleaner with water and vinager it will take it off.

I have a small ultrasonic cleaner as well. I think my wife has some white vinegar. ill give that a shot.

I had some moly bullets that needed cleaning--put them in a tumbler with SS pins and water and some Dawn detergent for about 2 hours--came out looking like new--can't imagine this would not work on the brass also?? Hope this helps.

So if all of that was "basically free", what's left, that you did pay for?

Trigger?

Magazine?

Five gallons of moly?

And while you're screwing around doing that, I'll be out shooting. I guess we all have our priorities.... 8)

Even more reason to just go buy new with the money you saved.

To each their own.

Ill tell you what "buddy". Not sure who you are, dont care. But if you wanna go find me 200 cases of 22 Hornet brass, buy it, then ship it my way, ill do exactly as you suggest. Otherwise not sure why your gums are flapping on this topic.
