Hit me with some good moly removal methods

I am not a chemist but I am pretty sure that Moly bonds chemically with metals. I will be quite surprised if you can remove it.

Yeah it bonds to the metal, but it can come off according to some reading ive been doing. Gonna try the white vingar and water method next. My wife used the last of her white vinegar so we'll have to go get some more. Ill mix it 50/50 and throw some in the ultrasonic cleaner overnight and let you folks know if it works. If that dont work, ill try some Kroil soaking or maybe buy some SS media for my tumbler. Thanks for all the help so far fellas.

Thinking out loud, would an acetone bath take that moly off? I have a box of moly DTAC's that I want to clean; timely topic.

Good luck!

Here you go if you need .22 hornet brass :

I clean all my brass by boiling them in a stainless steel pan with water and automatic dish washing detergent (powder). I keep them moving as they heat up with a plastic spoon or stiff brush, and rinse them in a colander in the sink when done. I'd be surprised if this didn't work for ya. jd

Well its gets even better...Just put the brass in the ultrasonic cleaner. Started pulling the dies apart so i could clean the bodies and stems as well cuz im sure they have that God awful moly built up in them. Was going to wipe out the seating die with a rag when i noticed there was no light shining through. Looked a little closer and realized there was a bullet stuck in the die! Not a loaded round, just a bullet. Knocked that out and wiped it down. All kinds of gunk and massive brass shavings. I know SIZER dies get dirty and i have to clean them from time to time, but i rarely need to clean my seating dies. Every once in a great while ill shoot some brake cleaner diwn them and blow em out with air to remove any dust, but thats about it. I cant fathom why he couldnt get the thing shooting with a seater die in that condition??? ::) The brass shavings were more like half rings that came off the mouth of the case. And how the heck do you stick a bullet in a seater die without noticing??? Its just a lack of common sense and proper die cleaning maintenance i guess. Just cant imagine ever loading ammo with such little care and lack of pride...

My offer still stands if you need me to remove the moly

Thanks Dusty. I'll get it tho. If i need to buy anything to get it done i will cuz i dont know when I'll run into this again. I always buy tools and equipment as needed when i need it. Over the years i have just about acquired it all. It looks like the ultrasonic cleaner and vinegar is working. Might swap my tumbler media from walnut to corn cob and tumble them some more too. The corn cob always seemed to do a better job than the red walnut media.

If you want to remove Moly completely from Bullets &/or Cases get an "Iosso Case Cleaning Kit" and it will remove all in a matter of minutes. It literally just falls off through the gauze bag and ends up in the bottom of the bucket. Leave settle and skim off the good cleaner then reuse the solution.

Wash/rinse dry then tumble if you want the shiny finish back.

Quick, easy and not expensive.

Edit.... Don't go past the time suggested in the instructions.

The white vinegar and water worked good in the ultrasonic cleaner. I now have the pieces in my tumbler with fresh media to get rid of some blotchy spots and put the shine back on.

That water was BLACK when it was done. My wife asked me if she could throw her wedding ring in there with the brass to clean it. I told her that wasnt a very good idea. Lol

All good. Ultrasonic cleaner with white vinegar and water mixed 50/50 followed by tumbling in fresh media and the brass looks like new. Thanks for all your help folks. Greatly appreciated :)

To add to my bewilderment, the fella said he didnt get it to shoot very well, but only tried ONE powder, ONE primer, and ONE bullet. It was Lil' Gun with the 32gr V-Max and whatever primer. Now get this...he said it wasnt shooting as good as he wanted, yet loaded up 100 rounds!!! Who does that with a load they know doesnt shoot good???

Sometimes I almost think licensing and testing gun owners is a not unreasonable idea. Almost. (I.e. Not.)

My 77/22 is my favorite rifle, hands down. But not until after I had it accurized by Connecticut Precision. (PM me for details, or Google him.)

Well the rifle already has a custom SS Lilja barrel free floating in a nice laminate stock and a good trigger pull. Any other accurizing needed (bedding, ring lapping, bolt lug lapping, etc) i will be able to accomplish on my own. Thanks for the heads up tho. :)

FWIW he took the slop out of two-piece bolt, recrowned, tuned trigger, rechambered and set headspace for my preferred rimfire ammo. All for $100 about 15 years ago.

I did the glass bedding and barrel float myself.

Thats crazy cheap! Be hard to make a livin with those prices today. If i need some smith work, i have a local fella who has done all of my work for years now. Great prices, fast turn around and everything he hands back to me is deadly accurate. We've developed quite the relationship over the years so i stay loyal to giving him my business when it comes to any machining work. Thanks again :)
