hipower shooters. what do wish you had known sooner?

I'm about to teach my first class on Service Rifle Marksmanship. What subject(s) for those who have been in the game do you wish you'd known sooner?

This may not answer you question directly but I have some information that may be helpful with your training. I have been involved in the training of beginners with the service rifle and have a write up that explains how we structure the training as well as some training materials we have developed. We also do training for folks once they progress beyond beginner to sharpshooter/expert level and would like to move up in classification. I have a lot of the training material in electronic form.

If you would like a copy of what I have, send me an email at chkunz@bellsouth.net and I will send it to you.

Best wishes, Clyde

I have a PDF I can share for an e-mail address. It’s maybe 15 years old now, a little out of date (standing-to-sitting for rapids, iron sighs only...) but still useful for orienting those just starting out.

What I’d wish I’d known sooner was how much fun it is! Starting at 53 - I just turned 69 - is kinda late in life.

So many things. Most of them subtle and really for those who have some experience.

Probably the biggest is that you don’t need all kinds of ne fancy gear. It isn’t going to help a beginner win anything.

That once you plant your feed for standing don’t go walking around to look through a spotting scope, etc. Small adjustments for NPA only.

That and that for prone you don’t steer and you don’t yank the trigger. It is all about being relaxed and not disturbing the rifle.

That for irons the post needs to be in the same place every time in relation to the rear aperture, not just the target.

That mental skill and toughness is just as important as your shooting skill if you want to leg or win or perform under pressure.

That the Badge IS NOT the end game but the gateway. That earning it is just proving to yourself that you kinda know what you are doing and have the potential to be good.

I think Dr_2297 pretty much nailed it. the only other thing I would add is don't become married to your zeros. as you improve, groups shrink and zeros change.

That Highpower is a Discipline.

Discipline: Something that you practice until it's almost natural.

Sadly, the time I had to practice several years ago, I do not have now.

Remember to have fun! Don't let your competitive nature and "winning is everything" get in the way of enjoying the sport.

There's no money in it, so whether you come in first or last your life isn't going to change at the end of the day. Highpower is a journey, enjoy the ride!

curious as to why you select both eyes open on offhand and not all positions?
Peripheral vision is a major factor in maintaining balance, especially important for offhand, compared to the other positions.
Stand and close your eyes, you'll sway. Both eyes open are better than one. I use a a piece of cardboard for a blinder so i cant see out the front, just out the side.

Stick with only ONE rifle and know the trigger behavior until it becomes instinctual. For example, if you are aiming for Distinguished, stay with the service rifle for all matches and practice. Ditto for the Palma rifle, if your goal is the national Palma team.

Concentrate on the front sight/ scope reticle and call each shot to determine if it's the wind change, ammo or you for any difference between the fall of the shot or you.
