High-Power Scope for 22LR

I'm entertaining the thought of doing a fixed high-power scope on my Kimber Model 34 SVT. First off, I'm trying to wrap my head around why a fixed power and why not a variable and have the best of both worlds? Then what power do I choose, 24x or 36x? If I were to do this, my thoughts are to do something in the same vintage of the rifle (97 thru 07). So that leaves me with buying a used Weaver, B&L or Leupold. What is the purpose of the fixed power and what power do I look for strictly to shoot paper?
DNT optics the one 7-35-56, you won't regret it.

Just as a reference point: Competitors in 50 yard Unlimited Class @ my local range are for the most part using Nightforce's 15-55X52 rifle scopes. They are the Unlimited Class shooters and are $$$$$ way out of my budget for just fun.
I shoot 50 yard (only) Factory Class and use a Mueller 40×56 Side Focus Target Dot scope on a Factory CZ 457 Varmint MTR.
IMO punching paper does not require a scope filled with windage and elevation information.....only fine vertical and horizontal crosshairs and and a very small center dot to allow you to pinpoint where you are on the target.

Weight

Pretty much all competitions have weight limits. Variable scopes weigh more than fixed power scopes. If you have a lighter scope you can have a heavier barrel.

Variable scopes are for people that can't make a decision. :)

Actually they can be quite useful if you need to reduce magnification to reduce the effect of mirage.

Fixed is great if you plan to shoot one distance only if so a minimum of 36X I would recommend. the variable gives the ability to power up or down if mirage is an issue, but you will need to adjust parallax when changing power.
I recently switched to variables from Weaver fixed 46X to 10-50X (Sightron SVED) and find that I am at the highest power and have kept it that way.

If you get mirage it can really help to dial back the power--That is why I changed from a great 45x Sightron to the NF 12-42BR also for paper punching with a 22 the DD reticle on the 12-42 is IDEAL It has a .187 dot vs many of the others with one half that size--
I see a lot of the NF 15-55 on the line but many run them at 40 power range or close not the full 55X
36X is fine until you see a 40-45 power on paper at 50 yds you get more exact when you need to hold off the X with higher power vs a 36X--that is very important with a 22 paper puncher and a little wind
Tight eye box is a drag--running the variable at less than max helps that a lot
Just my observations YMMV

IMHO, I have to disagree on your discussion. Leopold is right up the street from me and they have always been good to me. Even though I have never experienced what you did, I wouldn't shut the door on them. There's a reason you chose Leopold in the first place. Just my .02 cents.
Scope was less than a year old and was only on the rifle (.22lr) three times…. My daughter and I only get to compete together once or twice a year and after laying down a couple of hundred bucks in entry fees for major matches, the last thing I want to have to worry about is if the now “repaired” Leupold will hold up or not.

Went with a 36x Sightron and she loves it. The Leupold will be sold off.

YMMV.

Out of my budget too. IMHO, my goal to to get to the Leupold level. Good enough fir me. It's been a long time coming. Good things happen to those who wait, right?

So, let's put a little twist on this post. IYHOpinions, what brands of scopes are shooting the competitions? And is there anyone that dominates? I do not compete, and I'm thinking this will be just a range gun. However, if I switch up and decided to bring it into play in the rat patch, I have shot myself in the foot with a fixed power.

Weaver T36 for 50 & 100yd bench rest, excellent clarity, and no mirage which is bad at our range. For the long gong 300yd a variable is definitely better, ffp, graduated reticle. In other words it depends on the shooting purpose.

I have a weaver T10 and it is a great scope. Mine has a 1/4 dot along with 1/4 minute adjustments. I have used mine out to 200 meters and it is clear. Mine is an Old El Paso steel scope, so at least 20 years old.

I am not using it right now as it needs a good cleaning. The marks on the scope have faded so much, I cannot read the marks in bright sunlight anymore.

I still think overall for most shooting, a variable scope around 6-24x works best.

Just do not go overboard as I did with my long range rifle! My long range rifle has a Sightron S3 10-50x60 scope on it!
Dan I got that same 10-50 on one of my specialty pistols, so I guess I’m way over board lol

Sightron and Nightforce with a smattering of 36 power Burris, Weaver and 36x Tasco and always some fixed power Leupold but they are really starting to disappear
90% Sightron and Nightforce with that bring split about 50-50
We shoot ARA 50 yd mostly
