Wish I knew more on this but it appears that somebody in our club had a rifle explode. I found this "aftermath" scattered all over the ground at our 200yd line the other day. It appears to be scope fragments and its a cheap scope to boot. They are not in this picture but another guy says he found rifle parts as well and he said they look like AR parts? I never seen them so cant say. Might figure it out if we see a shooter wearing an eye patch...

The presence of the prism suggests it was a binocular or spotting scope, not a rifle scope and used for target practice. Perhaps testing the old sniper bullet through the scope fable?

I think somebody forgot their targets and just wanted to shoot something. When I was a kid, my brother and I would take our 22 rifles down to the town dump to shoot rats, bottles, chairs, appliances........heck, we shot at stuff just to watch what happened. Disassembling things with bullets is a lot of fun!

Never saw one blow up but I did make mention to a fellow on the black powder range that he had probably already loaded his two pellets and 250 grain slug when his ramrod wouldn't go down any further than usual. He denied it but lucky for him he had enough doubt to pull the breech plug. It helps to pay attention.

I got the scoop from the board member in charge of the outdoor range, turns out that a guy messing with his AR that either jammed or whatever he was messing with it and it went off and shot a spotting scope on the next table. Dont know any other details...

Great to finally see the actual cause, and not all the guessing and comments on what, etc.
But it is also very scary, that someone on a line, would not be using good safety control and have this occur.
Just damn fortunate no one was shot, instead of the spotting scope, on the next bench over.

We don't have many rules at our little neighborhood club but one that stands out is you only load one round at a time. The AR and magazine guys don't like it but that's the rule. So in a sense all guns are single shots until you are ready to send one round, and only one round at a time, downrange.

I was at a public range many years ago and was busily shooting away. I heard a shot on the next bench, and then heard a lot of commotion and staring at the roof. There was a negligent discharge through the tin. I IMMEDIATELY grabbed my gear. I've never been to a public range since.

I don't hold my tongue at the range if I see unsafe handling/actions. AR's, bolt,single shots and even muzzleloader have all caught my eye. Had a guy walk around deer hunting with finger in the trigger guard of his shotgun(slug season, he continued after I called him on it), told his friends it was him or me. That I wouldn't be part of an accidental shooting, they asked him to leave and not come back.

Most visitors will turn their pistols
horizontal them selves & benchs.
Takes teaching to get ppl to turn their bodies to keep pointed down range.
I'm not perfect so I can't expect others to be.
I'll call it assisting when I tell a #@; to point down range.

In one of the clubs where I have a membership, a prospect must pass an on range test with a designated "examiner" who observes how he/she handles firearms and follows safety norms. It also has over two dozen cameras. Screw up and you're gone.
