Help with mystery Remy

I picked up an older bench rig with a 722 action, 700 bolt and a 1-14 twist unmarked stainless barrel and was told it was a 222. A 222 round will drop in the chamber but would not fire nor would the bolt extract it. Tried a 223 round and the bolt came within an 1/8" of closing but would not, but the bolt will extracted the round. Studied all the wildcats from the 50's and 60's but nothing seems to fit in the gap between the 222 and 223. Any ideas before I drop it off to be re-chambered to a 223?

Isn't the 222 Rem Magnum longer than 223? I mentioned the 223 round would not allow the bolt to close.
I was using factory brass when checking the chamber for both of the calibers.

There is a 222.5 Really. In fact it was fairly common in the late 60's early 70's. It is a duece blown out, not a mag and not a 223. head over to BR central and ask. or maybe bheadbob would remember these, as he was shooting then and knows some history. i would trust him on it.

219 wasp! Make a chamber cast ! Check bolt face diam !
The 219 was a huge bench favorite, but don't risk guessing , make a chamber cast .
The 219 came in too many variations to list .

The 222 rimmed has a rim like a 38 Special - uses the 38 Special shell holder. The 219 has a head like a 30/30. Both larger than the .222 / .223 / .221 head. Someone asked if "new" 223 cases will fit, rather than fired ... Did I miss the reply?

Sure do ! But back then they had many . Basically take the 219 zipper specs and blow it out . The base was 30-30 size ,.506 or it could have been turned down to std .473 . Most were headspaced off the shoulder.

I've got about 3-4 diff rifles with dif chambers in 219 wasp . They have diff neck diam and or lengths , dif shoulder angles and diam
It was pretty easy to load for but once the 219 zipper brass was gone the next was 25 -35 , that supply was soon gone also . So form dies were used if your supply was limited .

If this is so then you should know that the base of a .219 Wasp case just in front of the rim is .416 and would never fit the diameter of a .223 chamber. The .219 is also much longer than the .223. dedogs
