Help with Chiggers and Ticks

Fall is almost here and with that a good portion of us will be in the field and some of us already are. It would seem that Chiggers and Ticks are at their worst until we get that first cold spell to quite them down. I have two words that will help with those pesky critters....Pantothenic Acid, AKA vitamin B5.

Outside of some foods we eat that contain Pantothenic Acid, (and I have no idea of what foods have it), another source is a "Super-B" vitamin, which I have taken for the last 30 years mainly because the "B's" are good for stress and I had a high stress job when I worked. I also like to throw a few down at times and alcohol destroys your B vitamins.

I had no idea that it worked on Ticks and Chiggers, I just stumbled across it.

It's story time.......Last August I took a buddy out to the property who I decided was safe to hunt with. We went out to check stands, cameras, put up a few new stands and just to let him see what there was to offer. Neither of us thought about bringing any repellant and that was a mistake....for him, not me. The next day he calls and says he is ate up with chigger bites and it was so bad he couldn't sleep at night. He asked me how bad I got it................I told him I was bite free, which I thought was strange since we were both walking in the same crap that day.

Two days later we are at the gym and he was telling another guy about his bites and how unbearable it was. The guy told him to start taking Pantothenic Acid, that it should help fend off the Ticks and Chiggers. So, he heads to the drug story to buy some and sends me a text saying he bought some. I said great send me a pic so I can pick some up too. He sends me a pic and its a bottle of Super-B complex, I thought that's strange......... I already take that.

It turns out that Pantothenic Acid is in the B vitamin family and I have researched it about being a bug "type" repellant and no where have I found it to be said. But for some reason it works. So, if you want a little extra protection along with your repellant and want to help your overall health, start taking a Super-B daily.

Safe hunting.

Mark

Thanks for the tip. It's a shame you're not a Gold Contributor, that would be a prize winner in my books.

Permanone around the sock tops, boots and pants legs - not on the skin. There's never any question about it working.

Brown Listerine swabed on with a cotton ball after you get eaten alive.
Spray your stand a couple weeks before the season begins. Spray the trails to your stand. It will kill the chiggers and wreck your deers nose too.

I agree with Knotwild with regards to the use of permanone, it' great stuff but please follow the directions very well, if this stuff gets on your skin it can make you very sick. Please use it with caution, love the stuff myself.

Just bought some Sawyers. It says the Permanone will last six weeks or six washings. I'd never make the six washings as I sweat very heavily and will wash every time I wear my clothes. Will also apply every time I wear those clothes. I know the Permanone works and have used it for years with great success..

I had a NASTY bout with fever and over-all gastro-intestinal disorder (most polite way I know how to put it) for 3 days running about 5 years ago. When to the ER as I was afraid I was going to wind up in bad shape due to dehydration.

When you can't keep water down, you're in trouble, ya know?

Anyway, the hospital kept me for 24 hrs on 'observation', and as I was feeling better, they sent me home. never gave me more than IV fluids, so far as I could tell and according to the bill.

A few days later, they called and said I showed anti-bodies for Rocky Mountain Spotted Tick Fever AND Lyme Disease.

'Holy Crap', says I. What do I need to do? 'We don't know. We've never seen this combination before.' was the reply.

Called back a week later, feeling fine. Asked again what I should do. 'Nothing.' was the reply.

Since then, I have been bitten by -0- ticks, though I've found numerous ones crawling on me, and -0- chiggers.

Guess they think I'm already dead. (?).

How much bleach do you add to the bath water?
A cap full, 1/4 cup, one glug.
I wouldn't want anything to fall off. :)

I shower instead of bathe and have a shower wand, so I direct the spray onto the bite site as hot as I can stand. The bite will itch intensely for a few seconds, then subside. Usually won't bother me again all day. Works for Poison Oak/ivy itch, fire ant stings too. My guess is it overloads the itch receptors for a period of time. I've been doing it for decades, works better than any lotion I've tried.

In addition, I'll be adding some B-Complex to my diet this fall, thanks for the great tip Mark. I'd much rather prevent than treat.

I spray all of my hunting clothing inside and out with permethrin. Keeps away and kills ticks, mosquitoes and other bugs. Not for use on the skin.
