Help with antique S&W

You have some black powder on hand ?? 40 grains of it, and
cast some bullets. Have fun with it......
No black powder but I do have a bottle and a half of trail boss. Only one piece of brass from a gentleman over on castboolits and no dies.

Josh the really nice 3rd model you posted list the materials used in its construction. One of them is lapis lazuli, i know you have an art background, can you shed light on what exactly that is? I don't think any of my firearms have that material in them.

Ha! I was chuckling when I posted that pic. Look how far we’ve come! Tiffany glorified the Model 3 with that rendition, “back in the day”. With the current New York attitudes, it’s a wonder it’s still shown at the museum. Lapis lazuli is a gemstone. I’ve only used turquoise , so far. Here:

Haha! Great idea!! Glass wall case like a picture frame or wood stand for the mantle!
Your shooting buddies will love it!

OH no this is meant to be shot, start looking for a smith that specializes in # 3s. It doesn't need to look as good as the one Josh posted in post #32 but the nice nickel one in post #26 would be perfect, that way it would look good but you won't be afraid to shoot it. You will be the only one at the range with one.

As in some one to check it out or some refinish work?

No, this needs a full restoration and heeds to be as tight as it came from the factory. It needs to be NRA 100%. I just love having others go down the same path of fiscal irresponsibility as I often do with some of my gun projects. This is a really cool revolver; I doubt anyone could fault you for making it perfect. When my grandmother passed, and then my father after many years, it came down to a coin flip between my brother and I for Grannies S&W. A top break 38 S&W (not special) that is nickel plated, and has pearl grips. I don't remember which model (i knew at one time) but many call it a lemon squeezer as it has a grip safety. My brother won the toss, so he got the S&W, I got second pick and got a nice 22 LR bolt action Remington. Then he whined and cried (he was a fireman his whole life, so it was expected) that I already had a bunch of 22LRs and he didn't. So to stop the kicking and screaming I let him have the Remington, and I got dads Stevens single shot 12 gage. I like fixing things!!!! I have a friend that is the best welder and fabricator I have ever known. I watched him fix a jeep jack that he could have replaced for way less time an energy than he spent on that one. He looked at me and said "you understand me don't you?" Yea you get off fixing stuff most can't.

“Smith and Wesson New Model No. 3, 44 Caliber
Double-Action Navy Revolver, serial no. “

I always thought the use of the word ‘NAVY’
implied 36 caliber, but obviously I am/ was wrong

Your right in that the 1851 Colts used by the Navy at that
time were all cap and ball 36 calibers. The use of the term
"Navy" was more of a marketing ploy. The US Navy actually
never had Model 3 S&W's in Inventory. The Army did.

Here's a little Navy research info......

And here I was saving for a Dillon 550 and a new mower.

Fireman his whole life...now THAT is hilarious (from an LEO POV)

I worked for a contractor that I apprenticed under his dad. He was a fireman and hired a bunch of them, on their days off. They called days at the fire house "dozing for dollars" They all worked with my brother he was the worst of all.

I recall a 635AM moment..

I was in the PD lot. I was absolutely DUN, jittery from being up all night, tallying up the (14) calls I had handled or participated in overnight. I stunk like a buffalo butt from being in houses where poverty, rancid beer and dirty diapers served as air fresheners. Through bleary eyes I noticed a shocking and somewhat hilarious vision. The front door of the FD next door had opened and a fireman was standing there, in a housecoat and pink fuzzy slippers. He was making quite the show of picking up the newspaper off the driveway. He looked over at me and waved, before feigning a yawn and going inside. I realized it was a joke, but also realized the last time I had seen him was at an alarm just after 11PM, and not since. Nice night sleep vs 14 hellacious calls. Knowing that the FD had a contract that matched mine, I rued the day I thought "Gee being a cop would be SO COOL". I am an idiot.

I do aggravate the guys that quit the textile plant where I work and went to Asheville fire department. I tell them they go to work to sleep. My wife has always been adamant about me not pursuing a fire career. She's not the happiest about me doing the volunteer side. We'll hit 450 calls this year. There is a solid 12 of us who do most of the work but we have about 27.

There is a vast difference between VFD and paid FD. And I have a great deal of respect for both, actually. I just rue the fact I spent my career working a LOT harder than I needed to for the same $, in my town. But in the end, I doubt I could have done the FD thing and enjoyed it as much. But when my neighbors house (22 feet from mine) burned, I was amazed at the brass balls the three VFD guys had who walked between mine and the one on fire, right past a downed main line that had just been arching and snapping, and charged a hose onto MY house, saving it. Hats off to them.
