Help with a gun purchase, please

The 16-18" barrel requirements kind of changes things. Most 6'5 & 6mm's performance really drops off with every 2" of barrel chopped off from a 24" one.
I'm not about to try change anyone's mind, but I have young friends who needed the short barreled uber cool truck guns. First, they do not do anything that warrants a truck gun, and for the most part, the guns have been rebarreled or sit idle. Most people I know aren't going to grab a 30-30 to shoot against 6 dashers.
That said, when my Godson was 9, he was shooting my braked 7 saum, a 19 yr old should be able to handle a suppressed 308.

I'm a 6.5CM guy and would reco that. (BTW I also own a Colt AR and an ACOG and can ring steel at 600yd) In your situation, I'd +1 for a 243. It will reach out to your ranges, it takes a lot of white tail deer in my neck of the high plains, ammunition is readily available and comparatively affordable, as are the rifles themselves. In my area and speaking of -30 cal rifles, the 6.5CM seems to be the most used for long range. Some using the 260s and I'm seeing more and more of the guys at the range showing up with 243s. Good luck with your choice. I've not read a bad suggestion in this thread so far and some qualified their suggestions as well. I think your son is going to end up one happy guy regardless!
