I have shot about 300 6mmBR rounds in the past few months. All varget. All BR4 primers. Most 100 yards.
The first 100 were barrel breakin and 80 grain bergers, and around 30-45 on a new barrel I shot a few groups that were 5 shots in one big hole. Probably about .25-.4" groups and minimal brass prep.
I really want to shoot this gun out to 600 yards so I tried out some 105 senecars, but I have never been able to close them up like those first few shots.
At 100 yards I am getting at best .4"-.8" groups and know I can do better than that. I have a savage action, 4 oz trigger, Sheilin 1:8 twist 26" barrel, in a BC medalist stock. Max tac 50 rings, farrel base, leopold comp scope. The tightest load I settled in on is 30 grains of varget with bullets jammed about .015.
I still need to bed the action and check free space, and I do not have a vld chamfer tool, but I have one coming. I am wondering if it is possible I am damaging the boattail when pressing the bullets and causing problems. I am shooting almost free recoil. Most of my 5 shot groups go like this. 2 bullets in the exact same hole, like .05-.1), one touching, a couple close but a general scattered group. Sometimes I will get a vertical string with 2 in the same hole. I am sure some of that is me.
I shot at 500 yards a couple of weeks ago and had major mirage problems, but the groups looked really good horiz but I had vertical strings there also.
I probably should try some different powder, bullet combos for 600 yards, but thought I would ask here first.
So my plan is to try a different powder or powder bullet combo, bed the rifle, work the brass better, vld chamfer and then polish the inside of the case neck, reduce the neck tension a bit.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
