Help. What Sako do I have?

I agree with what you are saying tenring. I have personally handled hundreds of old Sakos and the only problems they had were ignorant owners. The bofors steel was a product of Sweden and it was produced in the same mill that produced steel for the military gun called the bofors gun. The company name at one time was Dynamit Nobel.-Niclas

I have 2 of the L46's and I would agree about the pitting being common to these rifles. I am thinking of turning my "shooter" grade into a .17 fireball. I am going to work on it a little more and try the 34 grain MidSouth bullets and see if they will shoot any better. I think a medium contour barrel on this little rifle would be a cool match to the fireball. I have a L461 with varmint barrel that looks to be a perfect bore so perhaps I am just not lucky with the L46's.

Ah ha- More food for thought. I must discount sulfer as being the culprit that has destroyed the barrels of the old guns. Steel with high sulphur content is brittle and a barrel will not work at all with it. The steel does not come with high sulfur. It is added by contact with the heat source- coal and dirty gases that are used to make the steel. Acid is what would be the culprit in pitting and acid is formed by water coming in contact with metals. Variation in temperature will compound this reaction. Now we can draw the proper conclusion. Thank you, Niclas
