I have come by a sako action. all it says on the action is 'Sako I' no A prefix just 'I' its a detachable mag. Will it fit in a 691 stock or what stock will it fit in? What do I have here?

You'll need to furnish more than that. Maybe a serial number?
If it is an A1 action, it could be a L461, S491, or L579. With no other information a serial number would give you the information you are looking for. Do you have the bolt face dimension?

I assume it is a AI short action, calibers .222, .223, .17, produced approximately from 1988-2001,I don't have time to look it up). It should fit the stock of an L579 action, an earlier model.

Thanks tenring you are correct it does have a .223 bolt face. I'll try a L579.

The L579 is actually a medium Sako action, similar to the A2. There were no .222/223 bolt face cartridges on the L579 action that I know of. So it is doubtfull that a L579 stock will fit your small action. The earlier small actions that handled the 222/223 bolt face cartridges were the L46, L461, and A1 actions.

Some of the late model Sakos such as the Model 75 I think have the designation 'Sako 1' for the small action. The M75's had 3 lugs on the bolt instead of 2 like the earlier models so it would be easy to check.

RGraham is correct. The L579 stock will NOT work. The L579 was never chambered in the .223. It is a medium length action.

With a detachable magazine, it is probably a Rihimaki,hope I spelled that correctly), precurser to the Sako Vixen. I have a couple of these in .222 and it certainly is a fine little action.

It sounds like your action is a Sako 75, small action.,3 lugs) The Sako 75 small action stock is probably what you need.
