Help Update...with a mile 6.5 Creedmoore ?

New to the bolt gun....been dealing with the AR platform for 30 years. Planning on going for a mile with my 6.5 creedmoore tikka t3x tac A1. Optic is a vortex razor 5-20x50 in MOA, around 125 moa in the turret. 140gr Berger Hybrid, 2815 FPS, I’ve installed a 20 MOA rail on the rifle. Strelok says I need 77 moa for a mile...question is do I need more moa in the rings or not? Thanks in advance for any help,
While I would never advise against what your stated goal is I will advise you to take time to become more accomplished and knowledgable at shorter distances before jumping right into the 1 mile shot with a 6.5 Creedmoor. I own a few of them and have nothing but praise for the round in general but it is not a "one mile laser beam".
No matter what you do, the main objective must be educating yourself and having fun.

One thing you could look at is call Burris and see if they still make the 10 moa inserts for their 30mm Zee rings. If they do I would get a set plus the rings. That would give you another 10moa so you would have 30 moa between the rail and rings plus what ever your scope has.

I have these rings it would be the cheapest option and the rings are pretty decent. I live at 865ft and have shot a mile with 20 moa and 30 moa rails but I was using magnums or flat shooting calibers.

If you can find any kind of hill or burm that is sand or dirt and shoot at your target on it that will help spot your hits.

One target that works well is a 1 gallon paint can with the label off of it. In the sun it looks a Diamond even with a 20x scope.

My 30mm zee ring inserts are .005, .010, and .020not moa.

When I shot a mile I left my 6.5 creedmoor home and took my 338 Lapula instead and needed 63 minutes over my 200yds. setting to reach a mile with 300 grain match kings. My thought is why bring a knife to a gun fight.
I guess the same reason why some take a deer with a longbow and not a rifle. It would be fun to try the shot with a 6.5 Creedmoor but I would not sink any $$ into upgrading the capabilities to do so. I've taken some long shots with a .22 LR out in a lake to see if I could take out a wounded duck. It was fun lobbing rounds for effect out to 400yds trying to walk it in.

The biggest issue will be finding a bullet that will handle going subsonic. People have shot the 308 win at a mile but there are bullets in 30 cal that will handle going subsonic that are not real long. A 6.5 Berger is going to be long and not sure what it will do when it goes subsonic.

You might want to work out to that goal. We shoot that far once a year for fun and I can tell you that your goal is not going to be anything more than luck at a mile. with 10-20 guys shooting 20 rounds each at a mile we typically end up with an impact or two on a full size IPSC and nobody knows who even hit it.

You will go transonic at around 1200 yards and by 1400 hitting a full size IPSC will become problematic. At 1760 you will have went from supersonic through transonic and will be well into subsonic speeds. I would guess you will be traveling 800-900fps at a mile. Long pointy boat tail bullets do not like this.

One last word of wisdom. If you plan to shoot that far set your target up with a 30 degree can't to increase the impact area.

As I read through all the posts i sit and smile. I have a 36" Round Gong at the Farm I can shoot at any time i want to out to 1800 yards. I have invited folks over for the weekend to shoot steel set up like a PRS match. At one point during the weekend that has the most favorable weather conditions we head up to the top of the hill and shoot 1 mile. SO far the most impressive was a AR10 in 6.5 Creedmoore that hit it on the 3rd shot then went 4 hits out of 5 in a row shooting 140 Hybrids. They seem to handle the Trans sonic stage very well.
With access to this 1 mile distance I can pretty much do it any time i wanted to before I moved South. So I chuckle a little bit at some of the responses. You wont know unless you try it and for those who never have.. How do they actually know? More armchair quarterbacking like most internet responses.

I average about 60% hit ratio with a 7mm Rem Mag and 180gr Berger Hybrids in the Windy state of North Dakota.

Before the magic 6.5creed was all the rage a shooting friend of mine had one of the first once build here in South Africa, we used to shoot at a mile allot and wanted to see what the 6.5 and n 140gr bullet would do. My advice would be take allot of ammo with, if the wind is even remotely upset that day it will blow that bullet yards of target and as stated spotting the splashes are real hard

Yup. I chuckle too. Having shot my 6.5 Creed with factory 140 ELDs to a mile it's funny to read some of the response. lol

Now that you’ve said it ... I had pretty good success with my assembled not bought AR10 in 6.5 Creedmoor with a 22” barrel using factory ELDM 140 ammo, but I “cheated”. The shots were 1 mile but it was ~ 6500’ elevation out at the NRA Whittington center. Targets were rocks on the cliff faces, with 2 spotters assisting. Gridded reticles so you could look for ~ 1 MOA targets. Around 5-10 degrees upslope, distances measured with laser rangefinders. I also did it with a model 700 in 260 with 22” barrel using Eagle Eye factory ammo with Berger 130 AR Hybrids. These two rifles are close to being ballistic twins, and both were going subsonic around 1600 yds. My friend also made the same shots using a bolt action custom rifle in 6.5 Creed using the factory ELD 140s, except I think he had a 26” barrel. The weather conditions were beautiful with lots of bullet trace visible. I don’t think it’s less fun to shoot a mile at 6500 ft elevation, but it’s definitely easier. This was at a LR class where my buddy and I were the only two students that showed up so we got a lot of personal attention from the instructor. NRA Whittington is a great venue for LR classes, highly recommended.

If you read description on page they make ones that add or minus moa.
Mine are all 15 years old and they are all in thousands of an inch. The moa would sure be better. Thanks, I will look at the new ones. The distance between the scope rings will change how much your scope goes up at l00 yards. On a short action rem700 .001 inch change at the rear ring moves the point of impact up .830 inches at 100 yards. On a long 700 action it only changes .635 at 100 yards. I computed this many years ago but my numbers should be close.

As far as I can guesstimate, based on drops and flight time, I've walked onto a target and hit it repeatedly at 1500yds or so with a 6.5 Creedmoor:

It is entirely possible in good conditions. If all you want to do is have some fun and see what the rifle can do, then there is nothing lost in trying it out!
