Help: Reaming the last few thousand of an inch

RGC54's and Gene Poole's method is what I use but with a .0001 travel indicator. .002 is a country mile. I remove the travel indicator when not needed.

Tac284's picture of the travel dial on the ways to show precise location of the tail stock makes for very, very accurate re sets for chip clean out.

I have a cut down tailstock I mounted in a tool holder that has a graduated hand wheel.

Now that, I'd like to see...did you basically cut the cylinder off the top?
I know that some like to hold reamers via the toolpost, and feed with the carriage. Even with a floating holder, how do you establish your x-axis zero?

I swept the tailstock in just like you would a drill chuck or collet holder. Hit X offset and enter 0.000" After the roughing cycle I program a Z move out and X move to align the tool. free up Z axis and i go to work.

I'll add this as I'm sure it will help someone. This is my flush coolant system. Low pressure. The most important part is in the top right. Air and coolant come together there. The red handle with a check valve in front of it is the coolant. Just behind that is the air supply. The comes air from a foot valve by my left foot. It goes through a needle valve to control volume followed by a check valve. The air supply is T'd in to the supply line directly in front of the coolant controls, then to the rotary union. Close coolant valve. Blow out coolant INTO CATCH CUP, blow out chamber, wipe out with a patch and then check HS. Takes as long to type this as it does to do it. Barrel flush coolant system.JPG
