help here on this 270wsm..

Guys, just purchased a Savage Model-14 classic in 270wsm. Did the one shot and clean method for the 1-5 shots and then every 3rd round 6-25 shots. I'm shooting the 130gr. Winchester Ballistic Silver Tips, they have the black moly.) This took around 2.5hrs to complete the brake-in process.,Unless its not broke-in yet) My deal is when u clean the barrel, the first patch is BLACK!!!! blacker than it should be..IMHO. Cleaning with Butches Bore Shine and Barnes CR-10.
-Do ya think the moly is doing this?
-OR do ya think that this unburned powder residue.
i never had a barrel do this like the Savage barrel on this model 14.

What is ya thoughts and expierence with these bullets/gun combo.

any help greatly appreciated...tim

The moly may be leaving a bit of a residue. But I think what you're seeing is mostly powder fouling. On most of my rifles, the first patch through the bore comes out pretty black brown. I wouldn't be overly concerned unless you're still getting really black patches after 3-4 wet patches.

The other thing to keep in mind is that factory barrels tend to have a lot of ridges and milling marks in the barrel. I had one Savage barrel that was so bad it looked like it was threaded if you inspected it with a bore scope. That barrel took upwards of 90 minutes to get clean, with lots of brushing, and up to 40 patches with Sweets.

Now I have a PacNor that cleans with 3-5 wet patches and some WipeOut. It has never seen a brush. I've never spent more than 15 minutes cleaning the barrel, not counting dwell time) and it has shot 1.6" at 600 yards.

Give the barrel a little more time, and try some Wipe-Out if you don't like heavy scrubbing. On your barrel, I'd precede the Wipe-Out with 5-6 wet patches, then 3-4 strokes with a wet brush. I prefer to only run the brush one way, then clean it off before sending it through again. Other shooters think that's unnecessary--that it's fine to go both ways. I see no reason to saw back and forth in the barrel and it doesn't make sense to me to draw a dirty brush back over the crown. YMMV.
