Help for a newbe with 6PPC project?

Am about to start a 6ppc project & for $$ reasons, am considering the new Savage Target action. I want to have the barrel in a NO TURN chamber. Your advice please. Also, who makes a BR/Tactical stock for the new Savage action that won't break the bank? Thanks; I really appreciate the help/ Chaz

Does anyone have any advice on twist; & what groove; 3,4,6? I'm thinking of shooting 66, 68 Barts; maybe even an 80 gr Berger. Do you think that the Savage Target Action needs to be blue printed, or is Savage factory work good enough to have a smith screw on a barrel? Again, Thanks/ Chaz

None of the Savage actions are not true as they come from the factory. Nor are any other factory actions. Number of grooves don't matter anywhere but on Internet forums. To shoot the 80 grain bullets, a 12 twist barrel would be the slowest twist possible, a 13.5-14 is ideal for the 66-68's. As far as blueprinting, the action would benefit from a good truing job, but the rifle still wont shoot like a Benchrest rifle.

To be honest, unless you just gotta have a 6PPC, I would have it chambered in 6BR and go with a faster twist to shoot heavier bullets. The 6PPC is a phenomenally accurate chambering, and is well suited to 100-300 yd shooting. The 6BR is also phenomenally accurate, and suited to shoot well from 100-1000 yds. Between 100 and 300 yards, only a true Benchrest rifle can decipher the minute accuracy advantage of the 6PPC over the 6BR.

Here's the thing though, Lapua PPC brass is about ten bucks more per hundred than the BR brass, and theres no fireforming the BR brass...

Tightneck/ thanks for the feedback. I have a 6BR on a trued Rem SA on a Krieger 1:9 bl. It shoots well: .26 edge to edge, 3 shots, 100 yds, 68 Barts, 30.0 H233, Fed 205M, Lapua brass; .33, 80 Berger, 29.9 Varget, BR4, Lapua brass. I have always heard the 6PPC was superbly accurate & would like a new toy. Are you educating me by advising tht the new Savage Target isn't the action for me? I always appreciate advice & am willing to learn from other's experience. Funds are limited, so I was going to buy the Savage. Would I be that much farther ahead by buying a Stiller Predator?? It seems to be the only other action that won't completly destroy my savings account. As always, Thanks/ Chaz

Charles, there are a couple really good deals going on right now for used BR guns. You would be well ahead with one of these, instead of chasing after parts that aren't quite up to par.

I personally don't care for the Savage, and would true up a Remington before I messed with one.Keep in mind though, I don't have to pay someone to blueprint an action for me. With the cost of an action and blueprinting fee's, you'll be ahead just going with a Rem clone. That's not to say it won't work for you. I think the main reason for the Savage's popularity among shooters is the fact that they can be re-barreled without the help of a gunsmith. They are just Butt-Ugly though, IMO, and a Remington gives lots of after market options.

However, as Wayne has pointed out, there are many screaming good deals on BR guns right now. Just go over to the benchrest.com classifieds and see for yourself. I can tell you that many a shooter has been through many a rifle "searching" for ultimate accuracy, and until they got their hands on a true Benchrest rifle, never had a clue what Real accuracy was. Until you make the leap to a true BR rig, you'll always be left wondering. And I don't know a single Benchrest shooter that will tell you otherwise.

Thanks for the insight; I really appreciate it. However, when somebody at this offers to sell me a "bench rest gun", what assurances do I have that it will perform any better than one my benchrest winning gunsmith can build for me? Clearly I have to face up to the probability that I will soon have to buy a new barrel anyhow............pay for a chamber to be cut, pay for the barrel to be fitted.........

You are right, barre's are expendable. They don't last forever and there is no guarantee any of them will be top notch.

However, you asked about a Savage action for benchrest use. What has been advised here, is start with components that are proven, and you will save money in the long run. There have been a couple Hall rifles for sale lately for exceptional deals, and there is nothing wrong with a Hall. It will shoot with any. I used barrel will help you get your feet wet, and then have a new barrel installed when you're ready. You're gonna buy a new barrel anyway.

What did they say during the election? You can put lipstick on a pig, and you still have a pig.

Wayne; thanks......I'' put up a request in our classifieds for a 6PPC and see if anyone has a decent one to sell at a price I can afford. Again, I really apprecite everyone's advice/ Chaz

chazgreen.......If you are going use the rifle for competition, weight is the biggest problem. Savage actions are heavy. It would be "EXTREMELY" difficult to build a 10.5lb Light Varmint class rifle. "Good" used BR rifles run about $2,000 to around $2,200,although prices range from $800 to $3,000. A Remington, accurized) will make weight. To buy a Remington action & build a BR rifle will cost almost as much as a new BR rifle w/ a custom action, which is superior). I bought a good used BR rifle and LOVE it. Good luck. gpoldblue

tightneck,

I wish like all get out that I could do like chaz. But see, my other hobbies include build guitars and amplifiers. Now if I wanted a good tube amplifier, I could go to Guitar Center and get a great Fender re-issue. But then I'd have an amp and nothing to build or tinker with. Same for a guitar. I hate this anal affliction that I have about going through all the motions, time, and expense, but I do anyway. When I complete a period correct amp build, I've probably spent 3 times as much as a new repro would cost, and dang near as a true working vintage amp. So these tendencies have spilled over into my rifle enthusiasm as well. I don't think it's cureable, and I'm glad for that. Some day I will wake up and the good Lord will have given me some common sense.

You sound very much like me. When I was a fisherman, I wasn't happy just catching fish, so I started focusing on trophy size fish. After achieving those goals, I had to catch them on my own lures, then had to build my own rods...etc. Now my game is extreme accuracy. Having rifles built got old fairly quick, and I decided that I needed to start building my own. Well, I've always got something on the burner, multiple projects most of the time. Shooting competitive Benchrest helps keep me on my toes, because most of the BR gunsmiths out there are thinking outside the box. Keeping my rifles competitive is a year long job, and demands attention to detail. Its a great time to be involved in extreme accuracy shooting and gunsmithing.
