HELP FOR 600 YARDS

We have the same type of certification at our club, but many guys fail because of rifle issues ,such as the scope not having enough elevation adjustment , or the windage cranked to one side so that you run out of elevation too soon. put 13- 15 mins on at 100 yds and shoot a group to make sure everything is working ok. It looks like your gear is up to the task, but bad things happen sometimes. good luck

OP...listen to ole' H2O,,,I like to draw a plumb line on a large piece of cardboard (like washers & dryers come in )and shoot at a spot on this line at 100yds and then run the turret up the appropriate ammount (either for 600 or 1000 yds) and see if the bullet really does go up the paper that far ,,,and if it tracks straight UP like its supposed to,,,lots of scopes do not track well and will not adj the proper ammount,,,that way you can zero your turrets at 100 and be able to go up or come back with confidence,,,,,Roger

expiper..
test a 100yrds- running the turrets up an down several times say 10 MOA an shoot each time you find it tracks perfect, But POI is always 1.5 MOA to the right at the top.... no wind, solid rest.. how would that be correted ?
Thanks,

Best and safest bet would be to borrow a rifle already fouled and three rounds with which it was fouled with and was sighted in to hit paper at 600 yds. Since this is a test of your ability to keep bullets on target I would think this would be acceptable. You can refine your own load later once you get access to the range and time to test various combinations in Your rifle.

Rich,,,it sounds like the scope cross hairs are not exactly plumb/level...you should be able to see this if you run the turret up and watch it follow a plumb line (the rifle must be level also) as you see it run to the left/right,,,loosen the rings and rotate the scope just enuff to move over to the plumb line,,,it may take several tries,,,,you dont have to fire the gun,,,just run it up-n-down,,,Roger

Plumb line at 100. rifle solidly supported. Run elevation knob up and down, and watch it closely. it is more common than you might think to find that when the crosshairs are plumb, the change in elevation will wander off the vertical axis. The fix is to rotate the scope as much as necessary to get the vertical tracking spot-on, nevermind if the crosshairs look 'wrong'.

Thanks Guys...
didn't mean to hy-jac the threads,,,
only happens on one scope an appears to follow the plumb line.. i'l check it once again next time out

turning the scope in the rings... i would guess to the left ?... "correcting the poi that is off to the right" !
Thanks,

Use the Varget. You'll likely need to stop somewhere short of 45.0 gr. (standard internet disclaimer: start low, work up, stop at the first time of trouble).

With reasonable velocity out of your .308, 15 moa up from a 100 yard zero will keep you on paper at 600 yards.

At my local club, for a variety of reasons, we require new f-class shooters (dozens of guys every year) to verify scope tracking function at 100 yards, before they're allowed to shoot at 600 yards. This test flushes out more than a few equipment problems (even scopes with big price tags can have gremlins).

1. Verify that you have a good 100 yard zero.
2. With a 100 yard zero, shoot a group
3. Dial your scope up 15 MOA, shoot another group, keeping the same point of aim as #2
4. Dial your scope down 15 MOA, shoot another group, keeping the same point of aim as #2

When you're done, you should have a 2 overlapping groups at your point of aim, and another group roughly 15 inches above. If you don't, you have issues. They should also be horizontally aligned. If they are diagonal, you have some canting issues. Any issues with tracking found with this test should be addressed at short range.

You can also repeat this test for windage.

Good Luck!
