Hello new to the forum

Hello everyone im brand new to this forum, and Im looking into getting back to long range shooting.

I dont have a ton of experience but for several years I shot 5-600 yards the the Marine Corps and a few 1000 yard matches while on the Shooting team. Also while there we shot the M-16 the M-14 and I loved every minute of it. 0311 FTW lol.

Im looking to build a savage tacical/LR rig as soon as I can and im just wondering why the 30/06 and some of its cousins are loosing ground in the LR department.

Does the short fat powder charge truely have the accuracy advatage?

I ask this because it will help me decide how I want to design my rifle.

Welcome to the site Howdy, you have found to best shooting site on the net, and will get the best advice.
The 308 or 7.62 and 5.56,223) NATO round is still used in some matches, out to 600 and 1K. But the 6BR and its modified version, as well as some other wild cats, like the 6MM-284 and others have taken ground from the old standard Military rounds.
The BRs type cases, inherent accuracy, and its ability to keep the bullet supersonic to the target are a big reason for this shift.
That said, all my long range shooting is with a 308.
Mike.

Welcome to the site Howdydoit. You'll find all the info that is needed to make a decision on what to get or build. You will not go wrong with a Savage,I have several and they are all very accurate.22-250,.308,7-08,7mmrsaum,6CM. The last two are custom the others are factory.I shoot them out to 1000 yards, with exception of the 22-250. If you have any question's just ask someone will answer them, there's a bunch of nice people on this site. Don Dunlap

Ill second that on owing Savages, not only are they accurate, if you buy a completed aftermarket barrel, chambered and threaded) you can install it your self, no gunsmith needed, and set its headspace off your sized case. They also have a floating bolt head, that eliminates the need for more gunsmith work.
And you wont be disappointed in there accuracy from the factory, with good hand loads. And someday, if you really get in to shooting, you will want to start reloading, that's where the real accuracy is.
Mike.
