7mmWSM vs. 6mmBR??? What to build?

Hey guys,

sorry if this is in the wrong forum but i couldnt figure out where to ask this.

ive got an 1-8"twst shilen barrel in 223wssm that died an early death, about 400 rounds)and now im trying to decide what to make it.

i first thought i was set on the 7wsm,9" twist 5C Broughton barrel). i was turned on to this cartridge after seeing the gun of the week,High Country Hunter)owned by ric horst and reading about the awesome accuracy he was getting out at 1000yrds.

a while back i was really looking into building a 6br. so now im kind of asking my self which one would i be more satisfied with.

any imput would be greatly appreciated as far as barrel life, long range varmint shooting, loading issues, ive considered improved 6mm's but i want to keep the reloading process simple)and any pros or cons of each cartridge.

thanks in advance for any thoughts,
jeremy

well all the wssm cartridges use the same bolt face and ive got a sako extractor in mine already so i guess i should take that into consideration.

ive never heard too much about the 243wssm so i did a search on it. seems like its not nearly a accurate as the 6mmbr. i did like the 223wssm shooting the 75gr Amax at 3350fps, but that long range 7wsm sure is attractive. im just afraid that i wont have much use for it once its all said and done.....

i guess i just need to sit on it for a while longer and maybe something will come to me...

I have both 6 br and 7wsm both great guns. the 7wsm is a barrel block rifle 35# the 6 br is 17# light gun [I make my own rifles]
their uses are mostly for varmints. I consider the 6 br a good rifle out to about 500 or 600 yds and the 7 wsm takes over from 600 on out.
both will shoot 3 shots under 1" at 400 yds with good loads. The bullet strike is difficult to see out past 500 or so with the 105 berger out of the 6br. their is no doubt about the bullet strike of the 180 jlk at distance past 1000 yds making the misses easier to spot. even with a good rifle you do miss at long range, the bullet strike helps you to adj your aim. This is just the way I hunt ground hogs Your approach may vary.

When I owned a 6BR, I had a great time blasting clay pigeons out to 800yds with 87gr Vmax. Wonderfully accurate and handled the wind quite well.

I am now competing in local 1000m BR and F class matches. I have a few 7mm and a 6,5 Mystic, think 260AI). These larger calibres handle the wind way out there much better. Recoil much more and cost more to shoot. Wear and tear is much higher too.

However, for comp shooting, I want all the ballistic aids I can get and right now, the 6mm isn't quite there.

For varminting, I wouldn't bother unless I spent alot of time shooting beyond 800yds. The 6BR is just so much more fun to play with.
