Hello From NW Indiana

I've been shooting for a long time; IHMSA silhouette, Steel Challenge, PPC, Action Pistol (think Bianchi Cup), shotgun (skeet, trap, sporting clays), and other games. I've been reloading for around 41 years; 26 cartridges plus 28 and 12 gauge shotgun.

I'm pretty new rimfire shooting. I have been shooting some local matches at 50 yards in the summer and 50 feet in the winter. At 50 yards the target is the green monster. At 50 feet, very small targets made by the match directors. I am using a 1971 Anschutz Match 54 for these matches. I also go to a couple of matches that go from 50 yards out to 200 yards. I use a 1965 Savage/Anshhutz Match 64 with a bipod. That's a lot of fun. For a tie breaker we have a KYL at 50 yards.

I want to get more info on the equipment and techniques for rimfire benchrest type shooting. Glad to be here.

Welcome to Accurate Shooter/6BR from another Hoosier silhouette shooter. I started shooting IHMSA at Knox in 1980. Shot my first 40 there in 82 with 14" 7TCU Contender with cast bullets. Shot there a lot in the early days. Last time there was 2012. I still shoot 22's and field pistol at Wildcat Valley and some air gun at Linden. I shot some of the long range .22 rifle matches at Riley a few years ago.

How's it going, Dave? This is Steve Toneff, match director from Knox. I remember you. It's a small world, but I would not want to paint it. Since IHMSA died out, we started shooting long-range rifle matches loosely based on what they do at Riley. We shoot 50 main targets at 50, 75, 100, 164, and 219 yards. We have a KYL for shootoffs at 50 yards. We also shoot cowboy action. Whip McCord is my cowboy alias.

I remembered your alias from match reports. Doing well for 77 years old, been retired 23 years next month. Loved every minute. I was just getting good at shooting steel animals when it started dying out. From 03 to 18 I shot 28 perfect scores in UASHS mostly 40's, but 4 60's and 2 80's one at the 06 Internationals where I placed 4th in the shoot offs. from 05 to 17 shot 10 40's in UASFS .22's most at Wildcat Valley where I keep trying for another. I haven't been out west for prairie dogs since my 2013 trip to Montana. I got my longest hit that year at 913 yards with a Ruger No.3 in my wildcat .219 DW PDK cartridge. It's a 30-30 case 1.900" long with 35 degree shoulder. Load was 75gr A-Max,34.0gr H4350, 210M, 3200 fps. Barrel is 8 twist Shilen 7HV contour. I was hoping for a 1000yd hit but came up short. I've shot several coyotes with it since then from my 2nd floor bedroom window. My other 30-30 based wildcat is my .204 Wasp which turned out to be an exceptional PD cartridge. 40gr V-Max or 39gr Blitzking at a little over 4000 fps with low enough recoil to see hits with scope on 20 power. I'll see if I can get a couple of pictures to post. First pic is May 09 in S.D first time out with Ruger No 1 .204 Wasp 40gr V-Max at 4040 fps, 634 yards, this one and a pup close by. Second pic Montana 2012 alternating the 8 twist No.1 on PD's across the pond and .204 Wasp No.3 on the one's under 500 yards. I loved the trips out west from 86 to 13 but life gets in the way of things we would like to do. Life meaning kids, grandkids, great grandkids, 80 year old wife, acreage to take care of, surgeries etc.
