Best ammo for Ruger American Rimfire rifle

A bit of change of pace – from 308 at 600 yards to .22lr at 50 yards with a Ruger American Rimfire rifle.

I have tried several types of ammo with this rifle, a 2013 Christmas present from my wife, including several flavors of CCI, Remington and RWS, and so far the RWS Target Rifle has been the most accurate; capable of 1/2" 5-shot groups at 50 yards shooting from a bipod.

The problem is that the RWS Target Rifle ammo, normally available at places such as Champion Shooters Supply and Champions Choice, has not been in stock for a long while. I tried the slightly more expensive RWS Rifle Match ammo, which is available, but it did not do as well as the Target Rifle ammo.

At Cabela’s yesterday they had a brand I have never tried, Eley. These were in a black box with the name “Remington” across the top, and “Eley” on the side, made in the UK. I believe it was their Match ammo, but I am not sure if that is what the box said as well. These were $20 (well, 19.99) each.

I don’t like the idea of buying more 22LR at $10 to $20 for a 50-round box for evaluation, so I thought I would ask:

To anyone who has the Ruger American Rimfire rifle - what ammo have you found to be most accurate?

Thank you!

Nando,

Go to Killough Shooting Sports and see what they've got. Dan is the Eley guy here in Texas and has an underground shooting/evaluation range. He has most, if not all, Eley ammo and the pricier ones can be gotten sorted by velocity, machine they're made on, date, etc. Check him out; he's a great guy to do business with!!

Wolf ME/ SK match either about $7-8 (depending on how much and where you buy it) are made on the same machines (same headstamp even) and shoot exceptionally well (without LOT testing) in the majority of rifles I've tried them in. Are they equal to Ely Match or Tenex or Midas ..No, but they don't cost $14-25 a box either and the Ruger isn't a 3500$ match rifle either. I think you'll be happy if you try either The Wolf ME or the SK Match.

Unfortunately, the brand of rifle has nothing to do with which brand of ammunition is preferred. if you are lucky, your rifle will like cheap ammunition. But, all too often, the expensive stuff works best. Good luck in your quest. Try every brand you can find until you find one that gives acceptable performance. Then buy as much of that lot as you can find/afford.

Having real good luck with Norma Tac-22 ammo. A little over fifty bucks a brick and seems to shoot right along with Lapua centerX. And when you're lucky Eely black box. Well worth a try. Good luck.

I want to thank all of you for your recommendations.

I will be going to a gun show Saturday where there always are several dealers with various brands of 22's; two of which always have the higher priced ones as well, so I'll look for those 22's you mentioned.

Thx!

Nando
