Hedgerows, Wind, Eddy effect on bullet

That's amazing. I'll bet he had some serious money tied up in that. Since I don't have long range to shoot any more I have to make 200 yds fun.

I've been thinking about your original question and actual results. Then it hit me - wind behaves like water so yes, there are currents and eddies. I just don't know how to detect and adjust for them, or if its even possible.
Jim I don't know if you know Jono Carter from right around Walterboro, Hendersonville maybe. He has a range that goes to at least 1300 yards. Jason Wade (The Bluff) and Mark Brown that manages Combahee Plantation shoot there occasionally. Bill Demmer owner of (Whitehouse) has a nice little 400 yard range just off of Clover Hill road with a covered shooting bench.

Wind will also sweep around corners of blocks of trees, besides the eddies and upward air movement of wind dropping on the lee side of trees and flowing toward the base of the wind break. Temperature, humidity are in play with how the air flow is altered by tall structures.

There's one 700 yard long rectangular field I hunt. The wind aways seem to be running length wise and funnels from one end to the other. Almost seems like it speeds up when it drops from coming over the trees and runs down the field. This is one of my main fields or depredation shooting. It can be frustrating when you get wind from a certain direction all day long and the next thing you know the sea breeze had come up and switched the wind direction 180 degrees.

I think one slight difference between air and water is air compresses when it hits something, making it denser, so the effect gets somewhat magnified. But, just trust the target. I think over analyzing this, like trying to equate mph to drift, is not a good thing. Just do what the target says and I think thats a better approach, myself.
I see what you are saying. But Turpentine's bullets weren't doing what was expected based on a wind call. In fact, quite the opposite. I guess I was really trying to say that in certain places, at certain times, it's just not possible to predict where the wind is going to push a bullet as potentially the conditions could be changing at different segments in the path. Here in SC, a lot changes in the distance he is talking about - but on a long shot at a mule deer or antelope, where the terrain is more consistent, the shot is very "doable".
