Heaviest .22 bullet that will mag feed AR?

What is the heaviest bullet that will mag feed an AR?

I know the Sierra 77 MK will, any thing heavier?

Thanks,

Tres

It's the bullet length and where it is set in Overall Length OAL. I believe it is 2.250 MAX COL for the mag. That's not to say you could not shoot a longer OAL but it will be single shot.

Hornday has load data for their 68 gr BTHP bullet # 2278 and 75 gr BTHP # 2279 for a 2.250 OAL. These should fit, mabey tight) in your AR mag. Do not go with the A-Max since the OAL will be longer than your mag will handle.

I hope this helps

Jim

Tres,

77gr is the heaviest commonly available. Nosler, Sierra, Berger all make 77's; Hornady makes a 75 for mag feeding.

Thanks for the info,

Of the 77's, do you know which, off the top of oyur head has the highest bc?

Thanks again,

Tres

If you are going to shoot 77 gr. bullets you must have a 1 in 8 twist or faster barrel. The 75 gr Hornady HP will work in a 1 n 9 but not the 77's.

As a general rule of thumb, but not a rule. I have several 1/9 bbls that shoot 77s just fine and I have a 1/9 Savage 26 inch on a bolt gun that shoots 80s just fine. Bbl twists aint precise and velocity makes a difference. Only real way to find out is go out and shoot em. If they are not getting there or going in sideways, well, YOUR gun wont shoot em.

As for BC, I have never looked as they are low enough and probably close enough that its only going to matter in academics.

YMMV

Just like Stan says, my Savage 10FP 1-9" shot 77gr Sierra's just fine, shot a clean 800-61x in Keene NH last year with our buddy TallGun.

I shoot the Black Hills 75gr and 77 gr in my RockRiver AR without a problem. But if you go to the 77gr, you really need a 1-8 twist to handle it very actually. You can shoot 80gr with a single shot magazine and they are get for long range. My AR likes the 68gr and 69gr best as far as tight groups, 3/8 at 200
