I agree , seems to me like tape would crush. I've also heard thickness varies between brands. Easy to cut a disc from a feeler gauge.Use the metal shims, it want tell a lie.

Compression. Buy the correct gauge.I use a .003 shim cut from a feeler gauge
Jerry, what if the old barrel is not correct?lately I hardly use a gauge like it is supposed to be used. I make a ring gauge to measure from shoulder to the face of the gauge on the old barrel and then chamber the new barrel to the same depth. Thus the shoulder bump shouldn't have to be adjusted.

I have a grand total of zero no-go gauges. I put a dial indicator on the back of the bolt with the HS gauge in and measure headspace over the gauge directly via the end play on the bolt while its still in the lathe. Seems to work OK for me.I dont think i own a no-go gage. Tape works for me
