Headspace

Just for my information , can anyone see an issue , safety or otherwise , in this ? When headspacing my own rifles I use a go gauge and then I use a .003 shim cut from a feeler gauge to fit in the bolt face and the go gauge for no go.

A piece of scotch tape is .002 thick. Stick it on the go gauge to make no go gauge ....use two pieces

I agree , seems to me like tape would crush. I've also heard thickness varies between brands. Easy to cut a disc from a feeler gauge.

Tape will crush if you gorilla the bolt closed. If you crush tape you got other issues and if tape is .002 or .003 who cares as long as it doesnt close and is less than no-go specs. Keep it simple.

I use a go Gage and plastic-gage. Green is .001-.003 and red is .002-.006 .

lately I hardly use a gauge like it is supposed to be used. I make a ring gauge to measure from shoulder to the face of the gauge on the old barrel and then chamber the new barrel to the same depth. Thus the shoulder bump shouldn't have to be adjusted.

Define correct.

Maybe it isn't headspaced per SAAMI. But the owner is shooting it, has a load for it, has his dies set up for it. It may be his own "wildcat".

Of course this only applies to replacing a shot out barrel that the shooter is happy with and wants to duplicate.

I have a grand total of zero no-go gauges. I put a dial indicator on the back of the bolt with the HS gauge in and measure headspace over the gauge directly via the end play on the bolt while its still in the lathe. Seems to work OK for me.
