head space

Hi everyone now I'm not new reloading been doing it for years , But my question is how do i find the best head space is it trial and error only .I know my oal I've reloaded the same powder measure 42 grains of H450 { which you cannot get anymore} my rifle is a Browning A bolt is there a sweet spot from the rifeling i should go for do i back a 1000 at time or more , My 308 is a Tikka T3 my 7mm rem mag is a sako

Can you help?
 
NOT Headspace question, you are wanting to know FREEBORE(FB), Use a empty case seat a bullet LOOONG and try to chamber it, note the marks on the bullet where it touches the lands, this would give an approx FB to be calculated.

It depends on how much you tilt the glass and how fast you pour.

Kevin, An Alternative. F/L size a case. Using a Dremel cut-off wheel carefully put a vertical cut from case mouth to Nk shoulder junction. Deburr the length of the cut. Barely insert bullet into case then gently chamber & close bolt. Measure w/ comparator. Repeat several times to insure a consistent reading. (bullet not sticking to lands & pulling slightly out of case).... If you're loading from a magazine, Max bullet seating depth will be a function of magazine space. However, you can still vary seating depth accordingly by .005" or .010" increments to find your most accurate seating depth. You'll need a comparator tool to pull this off.
