HBN bullet coating

It definitely helps keep minute of prairie dog accuracy over many, many more shots and easier cleaning in barrel abusive situations such as high volume varminting.

Ive been drinking the koolaid for over two years and I still think it helps both of my match rifles. I don't clean often..say every 100 or so rounds. I do coat the barrels. I can't prove it hurts, plus I question the comments that its gone after the first round. Looking through the bore scope, it sure looks like its still milky in there.

I guess some folks are envisioning a bullet squeegeeing the coating out. My vision is more like a jet sliding down the runway with the gear up microscopically beating/grinding the coating into the bore.

Its just not that hard to do and I feel it gave me some better consistency from my 850 cold bore to the end of the match. I also think I was able to get a tad more velocity without pressure.

I have to agree with tonysnoo coating with HBN has given me better case fill with lower pressure resulting in low SD's and amazing long range consistency for cold bore shots and that inspires confidence, and that is critical in the game we play where we don't get any sighters, that first shot that you take at 850 yds can be the match winner or loser

Are you guys using Tubbs blend of Hbn or are you buying it elsewhere?

Here's what I use

I started with Tubbs kit..been through two of them before I found the bulk stuff. Both work, but the consistency came when the fine folks on here got me to try steel shot media.... gold!

If you would be so kind to explain in detail how you use steel shot media when plating bullets with HBN.
Size of steel shot.
Your plating procedure.
Thanks in advance

I myself use .092 SS balls (100) pcs in a pill bottle when I coat my bullets. Basically the steel shot impregnates the Hbn coating into the jackets easier than just the bullets pouncing into one another.

I've been using HbN coated bullets for a few years and think the main/sole benefit is more accurate shots before cleaning is needed. To me, this is a major benefit worth the minor amount of work involved. I see many people complaining about their accuracy degrading over the course of an F-class match (real or perceived....not sure). But, this prompts them to clean every day or even more often. Personally, I think over-cleaning causes its own problems and if HbN reduces the need to clean, that is a big plus. We've shot over 400 rounds between cleanings on our 284 Shehane many times and some of the best performances have been the very last string. So, we like the results and plan to keep coating those bullets.

And she took 2nd place at this years Bergers, a result oriented post.

Congrats again to Christine Harris on her fine shooting!

Randy Robinett and I were experimenting with, and using, hBN, for at least one year prior to David Tubb advocating it's use. :) :)

There are lots of folks on here that have a fair amount of expertise with this, so you will probably get many answers.

My procedure... I use a tubb bottle about the size of a medium sized vitamin bottle. I fill it with about a 1/4 - 1/3 full of steel shot. About 180 -200 6mm bullets will fit with about an inch of space left over. A use about 1/2 of a tubb measure ...maybe about 1/8 tsp size measure(a whole one+ if the shot and bottle are virgin). I tape the cap and put two of the in my vibratory bowl on their sides. I turn it on for about three hours. if everything is working correctly the bottles roll over and over while rotating around the bowl. I have put duct tape around the circumference of the bottle for added traction. If I use a smaller third bottle I can coat 500 bullets in 3 hrs.

When they come out they look satiny and slightly dusty. A few tumbles in a towel and the have a slick satin sheen.

Oh, prior to tumbling I clean the bullets with brake clean and tumble them dry in a towel. I heat up the bullets and media in a pan and then put them in the bottles very warm to the touch. Not sure if this is necc, but someone on here turned me on to it so....

It takes so little effort and time, that I coat everything I shoot in matches or practice.

good luck
