Hazmat Fee/No Fee

Way back when, I helped a guy that set off fireworks displays. Now that was fun work! Anyway, I became well acquainted with Hazmat “items”! ;) When this stuff is shipped, it is treated differently. It even has to be shipped thru different routes. It can’t go thru some tunnels or across some bridges. It never goes on a plane.

My last 8 pounds was handed to me by a regular FedEx driver. I asked about hazmat driver said hazmat guy was busy and handed package to her. WTF....at least I got my package!

Lone Hunter-

Adult signature required for me. I am ok with that and sure as hell don't want powder sitting on my porch in suburban NY waiting for me to get home. I always go to the FedEx center where they park the trucks, go to the office and tell them the tracking number. Sometimes, they leave a door to the area open and I can see an area with a huge cage and lock (where they do segregate the hazmat packages).

The fine would be the least of one's worries. If any injuries, the lawsuit would force you and your S/O to work until dead.

Josh, I tried to volunteer to do this a few years ago and was told I needed some sort of certification, license or other training to do it.

But as good as the various postal carriers are and the government behind them, why would it not be safe and sound too use them ? Hell they are so great, if you read all their propaganda and listen too the news.
Because the mail uses air carriers and it's illegal for hazmat on airplanes.

Well, 25 years ago folks bent the rules more! It was a family run outfit and one of the sons worked for me. After one show, I went home with a box of “leftovers”!!
I’m pretty sure that they were “Certified”, which is what you speak of. You did need to have the certificate to purchase the big commercial stuff.

There is no such thing as an official or a required hazmat charge. It is an arbitrary fee charge by some certified hazmat shippers to cover the cost of training, certification, packaging, labeling and record keeping for hazmat shippers. These fees go to the shipper not the carrier.

The company I last worked for before we moved from Houston had more than one customer that got their Hazmat fees waived due to the volume of their purchases. Hazmat fees are retained only by the shipper and unless there is some type of damage no one ever looks at the shippers records to see how it was handled. In the case of delivery trucks of say, welding gases, the law enforcement authorities can check the driver's manifest and the full and empty cylinders and placarding and it better match the manifest or a fine will be imposed. Medical Oxygen is a whole different story as far as record keeping and audits, but that's an FDA thing.

What’s the story with hazmat fees. I understand they must be paid when a company ships something that qualifies for one but what about an individual? If I want to ship a pound of powder, am I allowed to do it? Which leads me to my next question, what is the penalty for not paying a hazmat fee when something requires one? How the heck would UPS know what I was shipping? With the powder and primer shortages I would like to be able to trade items with people.
Shipping w/o a Hazmat Declaration,is a FEDERAL crime,The ATF would get Involved, The Trucking Companies that Transport it have to Have , Drivers w/ Hazmat Certification, Hazmat Approved [ by FBI ,Trucks Must Have Hazmat Placards on each side & end of Trailer,if Not HUGE Fines, loss of License ETC. NOT Worth the RISK

Yes indeed, and now that every item that needs it has the required information to conform defaulted in most if not all company's computer software, it takes zero extra effort to comply with the rules. But we still pay the fee don't we. Here's the candy store. Buy items by the pallet, pay one Hazmat fee, break the pallet down and sell items off one or more at a time and charge a $20 or more Hazmat fee for each shipment. Ka-Ching!

If only we could find that pallet
