Having to bump shoulders back on new Lapua brass to chamber??

opinions vary

whatever works for you

I always measure the new brass and compare it with my records of brass length in my rifles. Then I do what is necessary. Might be sizing, but usually only making the case mouth round then chamfer.

And yes, the Lapua brass I use has all been short.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong here.
Aren't shouldered prefit barrels purposely chambered SHORT? Then the headspace is corrected by using go/no go gauges and a reamer?
Or adjusting the headspace by using a slightly thicker recoil lug, again using go/no go gauges to confirm the fit.

I think we are talking about different definitions of a prefit. This is not an intentionally short chambered barrel like brownells sells or use to sell.

This is a Nucleus prefit that is supposed to headspace right up due to the tight manufacturing tolerances of the receiver. Similar to a Bighorn, Curtis, Impact, once the shop has done one they have the measurement to do any receivers of that same model. Well looking at my situation, in theory at least.

Yes I don't think people quite got that from your post. Good job summing it up. I predict you do indeed have a chamber .004 +/- short. Unless the sticking is coming from a tight neck you have nothing to worry about. If it were mine I would probably set the shoulder back or make sure the bolt lugs have high moly grease on them. If it is camming over hard it could cause galling on the lugs.
Best of luck.

I myself like the tight headspace I headspace my svages tight throw the no go away actually never used one,

You can rent Go/No-go gauges from 4DReamers.com for $8 a set. Well worth the piece of mind.

Have a local gunsmith with a Creed reamer and head space gauge? .004"-.005" is an easy run it in by hand or just keep doing what your doing. Considering it's a new barrel and you've got 2000-3000 rounds of barrel life, having it right would be my choice. Not a safety issue but be aware of potential galling issues with the lugs especially if its stainless.

I used the go gage and shims to get the chamber case headspace . On my 308 the go gage is 1.630 plus a .002 shim gives me a slight resistance on my bolt . My brass after firing expanded making the case shorted , using a F/L RCBS Standard die with the expander ball and the Redding Competition Shellholder set of 5 enables me to size to .001- .002 no more or less . Im getting accurate reloads with no hard chambering or bolt galling problems . Some of my friends neck size only until , that's what I didn't like about neck sizing , not all your brass that is neck sized forms the same , they all don't chamber hard at the same time . I make all my sized cases as exact as possible , with little wiggle room as possible I found that worked best for
me .

I've got a custom 270 WSM rifle I had built last fall and I'm experiencing the exact same problems as you are. Those that know a lot more about gun smithing than I ever will have told me that the chamber has been cut to tight. Sending it back to have the chamber lengthened.
