Have YOU Shot 500 and 600 Yards With 22LR?

6and7mm

I may need a 12 step program to break this hobby

If so, let me know what you believe the hit probabilities are for five shots at each distance, if your elevation adjustment is accurate, and here's the catch...the target size is 12" x 12". The A scenario is shooting prone. The B scenario is shooting from a bench.

I only ask that folks answer this that have actually done it or was there watching and spotting for others that have.

Thank you.

Wait a minute. You want people who have actually done something (insert something here) to respond. You want first-hand experience with (insert something here) from folks. You don't want speculation or opinions on (insert something here).
Good luck.
I, for one, have not shot a 22 lr at those distances.

I've done 500, but not as formally as you'd like for experimental determinations.

We were shooting at an old, rusty gas can and the hits were audible. The whole thing looked more like indirect fire than anything else.

The elevation was too great for the scope we had on the rifle, so we shot at a branch half way up a tree in the background.

I probably could have made a hit probability of 10% with the rifle I was using, but I don't remember counting hits and shots. It was quite a while back.

I'm going to say almost impossible at 600. I tried it and the calculator said about 58 feet of holdover or 117 moa of elevation. So aiming most of the way up a tree behind a metal buffalo sized target I was able to walk it in because the ground was very soggy with standing water and I could easily see splashes. Still took 15 or so shots and if the ground didn't have standing water it would have been impossible without seeing the splashes. But a 12"x12" target... good luck.

Thank you guys for the feedback. Please keep it coming.

I've banged 10" plate at 500 with a souped up 10-22, NF scope with rings and bases that allowed me to have 102 moa of up travel.
Never did I connect in 5 shots, probably 12-15, and once on the plate, successive hits were far from a guarantee. Only on warm summer days with virtually no wind also. A 10mph full value wind made hitting a 10" plate at 300 a feat.
There are way better rigs than the gun I was using, and I am sure it is doable. I took the gun out on a bluebird winter day, 45 deg, no wind, with the ammo at ambient temps, 400 was not achievable. It was shooting 6 feet vertical, if I recall hitting 300 was iffy.
Edit: At 600 yards, spotting bullet splash is going to be tough, a good spotting scope or camera system will be an asset.

Interesting. The vertical stringing in winter weather seems to be on par with group observations.

I was shooting Norma Tac 22 ammo, I know there is higher quality ammo available. I got into this in the ammo crunch, this was affordable and available all the time.
You say group observations, what does your group say on wind? Wind kicks centerfire rifles asses, it knocked my butt in the dirt. Wind messed with my vertical almost as bad as the cold. No point in continuing.

I rigged enough tapper in the mounts and rings and mounted a 4.5-14 LR/T M1 on a CZ 455 with a Lilja bbl and shot it at 500 a few times,,I used Center X and R50 ammo and the vertical was still too bad to expect hits on a 12" plate even if there was no wind,,if you got the elevation dead centered you would make a few hits now and then but I never could string together enough in a row to say it was a success ,,but if there was some bad guys in a foxhole I could have made them nervous about sticking their head up,,

and shooting 50 times and calling the 5 hits a group is not cool either,,IMO,,

I've spotted for guys and shot at prairie dogs at 400 yards. Using a ruger charger you could walk the rounds in but more of an indirect fire than precision. My factory charger with federal match ammo was not as good as my buddies custom charger using good ammo of course

Even a 17hmr 10" barrel contender it took a lot of rounds to shoot three prairie dogs over 400

Shot 300 for group , std vel 40 gr , actual 9-13 FEET of drop ( if memory serves me) it was such a difference in drop either due to velocity dif in ammo or wind fron 6:00 . At the time I had 59 min of inclined base .
Using Super match ammo helped 1020 fps but 8" was my best group
At 200 I could regularly get 2" , its between 200 and 300 that gets me
600 your just indirect fire with a 40 gr lead bullet .
I've tried 1-8 twist squeeze bore 60 gr Aguila , not worth it

Yup, here is the video at 500. Did it last Monday. Was just going to put a post up and saw your thread. Will do that right after done here. If you check out my thread on this you'll see we actually got 8 for 10 shots at that distance. There are plenty of other videos on my Youtube site with the 22 rimfire at Rayners and also a lot of the target racks I use for my matches. Youtube search longrange or longdistance and xp100 That should bring up videos of Topstrap44.

I have shot out to 675Y with my Anschutz 1827F/S&B 3-20x50 with H59 reticle via 28 moa base. It took somewhere around 44 mils to get there. So scope was topped out and I used holdovers in the reticle to account for the rest.

Of course it wasn't on a 12" plate, it was a 2'x3' plate. I hit it often because it's huge. With 22's at those distances the normal thing is the vertical goes big and normal winds blows the bullets off the target.

I haven't done it since, kinda silly.

It's like shooting a 308 at 2200Y with 175's.

A friend and I tried it several years ago at 600 (10" plate), the hold over is huge (we had an aiming point on a far away mountain) the wind would blow us yards off target, pretty much felt like luck when we did make a hit

I have shot at Rayner’s, the same range in Topstrap’s videos, twice over the last two weeks. In calm conditions (which is critical), I’d say I averaged 3-4 out of 5 on IPSC silhouette (+/- 18”x24”) at 500. Moving to a 16” plate made the hits go way down, probably to 1 out of 5.

At 600, it was probably 2 out of 5 on the silhouette, though I did hit it 3 times in a row once. I only hit the 16” plate once out of about 10 tries. My come-up at 600 was around 40 Mils, combo of dialing and reticle holdover.

Any breeze at all, and it was impossible at 600.

Have shot at 400 yards. That was far enough to make me think any further would be just lobbing lead slugs. If you want to shoot further you're more persistent than I am. Wayne

Check out the Rimfire ELR match criteria for July 28th, 2018. This is why I am seeking real-world results so I can understand what the real-world expectations should be for this match.

Watched Jerry Miculek break balloons at 425 yards with a 22 taping a episode for Impossible Shots one morning. I am lucky I shoot at his range.
