Has this happened to anyone?

I was at the shooting range several weeks ago shooting my 7 WSM when one if the rounds won't chamber. I set it aside and thought bullet wasn't seated properly or the case needed to be resized.
Just today I started to reload my empty cases when that one that didn't load was in the corner of the ammo box. I took it out and measured the base to ojive,and noticed the measurement was a lot longer. I thought this couldn't happened and took out another loaded round. After setting them both side by side, I noticed the bullet looked a lot bigger.
I took out my calipers and saw the bullet was a 30 cal. I don't own a 30 gun and don't have any 30 bullets.
I'm guessing since I only have 2k bullet tension, the powder must have push the bullet out. I'm glade the round didn't chamber.

The neck dia of your chamber is likely what prevented the round from chambering since the neck OD of the round would have expanded to accomodate the 30 Cal bullet.

You didnt happen to get a "Deal" on some factory closeouts, pulled bullets etc or anything did you?

I had a problem once with an order of "closeouts" from Midsouth where the bottom/base of the bullet blew out and the jacket itself stuck in the rifling
The next round tried to punch through the stuck jacket and pressures went through the roof and shot the magazine out like a bullet itself, broke the extractor etc
I would avoid, "closeouts",....... factory blems may be ok but check 'em over

I've purchased bagged mixed lots of bullets. Had neighbor kids help me separate them. First thing I had to show/teach them what a boattail vs flatbase is.

I am puzzled how you could seat a 30cal bullet in a 7mm neck without noticing it took a lot more effort.

I use a Foster co-ax so maybe the leverage advantage didn't cause me to notice anything. Not sure how I missed it but I've reloading for 12 years and this has never happened to me.

I've accidently put 7mm bullets in a 6.5 before - grabbed a box of 140gr Bergers off my shelf and wasn't paying attention. I caught it halfway through and had already loaded quite a few.

I’ve had that happen. Finding an odd bullet in a box that shouldn’t be there. A couple times, my fingers somehow picked up the difference in diameter. Most times, they didn’t but the extra seating pressure did. Gotta be careful!

I got a 17 cal in a box of 223's one time. I had to wrap it with tape to get enough neck tension to keep it in the neck of my 222 case.

Once upon a time I bought a custom 98 mauser in 7x57, barrel was UNMARKED. Fired one round, smoke & gas belched out of that mine, had to pound the bolt open with a stick, the primer was just a black hole, the case shoulder was way forward, very short neck.
Turns out it was a .270, I had just put a .284 bullet down a .277 bore
I got a new Ruger 77 7x57 outta that deal.

I would have bought a lottery ticket after surviving what could have been a complete catastrophic failure......!!!
It surely was your lucky day to not have been wearing chunks of the action or pieces of barrel or anyone else next to you...
I have witnessed the complete explosive destruction of a Weatherby 270 Magnum that the owner only barely escaped with his life when the bolt came through his cheekbone and out the other side..
Pieces of the wooden stock were blown around for about 10-15 feet in all directions.
I suppose you were lucky not to have the bolt come back through your cheek or forehead.

I sort my bullets every time...so this is not super uncommon to find a oddball round in in box of ammo.
It happens. You need to be careful loading ammo .....there's so many ways things can go wrong.

I had a 95gr 6mm Berger appear in a box of 65s. It's subtle to notice when you're looking at a box of shiny things all the same shape.

I'm surprised yours seated without monumental effort.

A few weeks ago I was loading 7mm TCU with 139gn Hornady SSTs. One of them I grabbed from the box seemed harder to seat. I looked at it and there was no cannelure and the tip was a different color. I pulled it and it was a 162gn ELD Match. That would have been and interesting round to shoot. To be fair to Hornady, this was a box of pulls.

The difference in those bullets is huge. When loading, you didn't notice that?

I've been handloading since 1968 and have had similar experiences with at least three manufacturers. Now when loading either rifle or handgun bullets, I spread the bullets out on a shop rag prior to seating. It's easy to see any that are not the same as the others and cull the offending culprits before getting anywhere near a case full of powder.



Since doing it this way, no unexpected bummers and no blown-up guns.

I have never got the wrong size bullet yet but several years ago I bought a factory box of Remington 243 shells that had 1 round of 22-250 in it, contacted Remington got no response.

I had the exact same happen. It was sure noticable.

I got several boxes of 22mag ammo that every shot results in a split case, I have several more from the same maker that don't. I've called Winchester several times and never had they pick up the phone.
