Harris bipods

For those who have experience with the Harris bipods, which model do you prefer for prone shooting? The 6" to 9" or the 9" to 13" model.

Thanks
Darin

I don't shoot off a bipod anymore, I use a shooting cross stick. But I did shoot off a bipod in the prone for about ten years. Definitely the 9 - 13" is much better for shooting from the prone especially for hunting because of the varying terrain. I believe the 6 - 9" is designed for primarily shooting off the bench.

I think it would depend on your body build and where you're most comfortable at in the prone position. Try building up a stack of books, magazines, ect. beneath your rifle until you get to a height that is easy to lay behind while spotting through your scope. Don't force your neck or chest into position doing this, though...keep it comfortable. Measure the height of the stack & you've got it.

I've used the 6 - 9" for target shooting prone, on a level, nicely mowed range. Obviously not a great amount of clearance for vegetation and other field obstructions, if present.

6-9" if shooting off a developed firing line...such as at a range. As mentioned, for field work/hunting the 9-13" may be required. I use the 6-9" for prone 600yd matches and it is set on the first or second nocth from the bottom typically. For coyote hunting I use an 18-24" (?? or close to that) but that is from a sitting position.

i prefer to use the 6-9, how ever if i am hunting in alfalfa fields with a little growth than i might have to switch to taller one, but the shorter is definitely more comfortable to me. Very handy to have both.

on the other hand .. what do you figure on using it for?...for varmint hunting i have a back pack that i actually pb use more.. i dont have to swap it on guns if i dicide to use a different one i can get pretty stable with it, my one side i can pb get to 14'' or so... jmo ... for what i prefer

I shoot PD's off a portable bench. The setup to have is the 6-9" swivel model with notched legs. Then add a PodLok. Also install a bubble level on the gun. I screwed up and skipped the notched legs: bad move.

Shooting off a bipod requires a very different technique versus shooting off traditional bags. Takes a lot of practice and "unlearning" old habits. Forget everything related to free-recoil shooting.

I have both. I use the 6-9" more.

Typically when terrain dictates more elevation i end up using a tripod. Im in texas and its pretty flat here, in the mountains it could be way different.

I agree, and it was to the point where I was trying to figure out what happened to my rifles accuracy!!!...but I seem to be unable to figure out the "technique"....when I do a lot of load testing, etc. off the bench, just about the time I start getting the hang of it and shooting really good groups it's time to switch back to hunting with the bipod and I have to learn "how to shoot" all over again. The only thing that has worked for me is a lot of shooting off the bipod to get used to it again. Probably not a bad thing...I can always use the practice!!!

I use the 6-9" model and I have both the notched and older style. I always use the "S" type that swivels. I guess I am just plain slow because I still have yet to figure out what those notches are supposed to do for me. One thing I have added to all my rifles {well, the ones that I have a bipod on} is the Accu-Shot monopod. A simple piece of 550 paracord tied between the two legs at the bottom works as a "quick deploy" handle to pull them down into shooting position or snap them back up quick and easy.

Seach through the Daily Bulletin archives. There was a great article about shooting tiny groups via bipod.
Edit: Here's the article.

Make sure you buy the Harris Brand, there are several knock offs out their. I have personally met Mrs. Harris at the Shot Show. She has been very supportive to the shooting sports. I try to take my business to companies who support shooting. The Chinese knock offs are not Harris.

I almost always shoot from bipod, most always in prone field type matches with natural, varied and uneven terrain. The 6-9" Harris BRSM is their best model. I prefer the Atlas bipods now. The lower bipod gains you a little more stability.
However there are a few things to consider. First is where are you shooting, high grasses may interfere, but a 9-13" isn't gonna help much. The stock also has input on which will fit better. Last is your body. How big or small are you? Beer belly? Comfort is king... Well, practice helps too...

I have 6" to 9", 9" to 13", and 13" to 27" and use them all for different shooting conditions.

Since you were rude enough to bring politics into a non-political thread, I'll state mine: I prefer goods made overseas.

Apple computers are an excellent example of the top end of Chinese goods. And they're better than anything put out in the U.S. I am, in fact, typing this on an Apple laptop.
