Hand press

A lot of you might think that a hand press wouldn't have much place in your reloading process. I never considered it until a few years back when member rocketvapor posted some pics on another forum of a Lee hand press. It looked kind of interesting, and I just happened to find one used in a local shop. 25 bucks and it was mine.

I found that even though I don't often load complete cartridges from start to finish with it, I do frequently use it for one or two of the steps. Last night, I sized and deprimed about a thousand 38 Special cases at the rate of twelve per minute. I might be as fast with a press, BUT-- I did it while lounging on a couch watching TV. Could also have been in the back yard under a shade tree.

Next step will be to expand the case mouths, and I'll probably do that the same way. Prime with my hand primer, and then move to the bench for charging and seating. jd

JD,
I have 4 Lee hand presses and use them for various tasks. I don’t generally ever load ammo with them but I have deprimed 1000s of cases with them and for .22 hornet I do all steps with the little Lee. rsmithsr50 posted a Hunnington hand press yesterday that was a really nice looking press!

sorry, no tv outside...

I actually carried on through with my hand press project this weekend. I hit it an hour here and an hour there, and wound up with over 500 38 Specials for my trouble. All steps completed with Lee hand press, Lee hand primer, Charging with Little Dandy powder measure. 125 gr cast wheel weight SWC's over 3.5 gr., ancient Bullseye. Very accurate blinkers for my full sized revolvers, and snappy enough for my chick's snubby. jd
