HAD FUN WITH MY GRANDSON TONIGHT!

jonbearman

I live in new york state, how unfortunate !
Tonight I had my grandson come into the loading room to see if he was interested in reloading at all. He is 10 years old and a computer game junky. So I tried a little reverse psychology on him saying to him "This wont probably be fun to do" and the next words were can I try it. So I explained why you have to do it and how slow the Wilson trimmer is compared to my 2 gracey's set up to do .223 and .308. Tonight was .223 Remington night. So I showed him how to put light pressure on it to make it go in straight. Next thing I know he is getting fidgety to try it. So I let him go and he did about 50 cases in about 6minutes. He was hooked. I have never found common ground with him because of the addiction of those useless games he plays for hours. Tonight was my sons night to have his kids and then they come back tomorrow for the weekend. He cant wait to comeback and help me much to my amazement. You see in this state you have to be 12 before you can shoot. However it doesn't say anything about him or anyone under shooting age to do reloading processes. Maybe I sparked his interest finally. Now I cant wait till tomorrow afternoon to get him going. I only hope his screw ball mom doesn't find out as she just loves drama where there is none. I only hope I don't catch heck for doing this but his dad stood over us to watch. I basically found something to bond with him about as I really cant stand computer games. I am psyched!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good. I hope you can continue to build a constructive relationship with him. A man needs to find an outlet for his hands. To create something. :)

Jon that is fantastic. There is a special bond between boys and their grandfathers. It's a tangible connection to their family history that the boy will always hold in his heart. Sometimes it just takes a spark to get it started I suppose. My grandfather taught me to shoot coke bottle caps nailed to a corn crib with a Remington 513. And on my 11th birthday he gave me a Nylon 66, my first rifle. Enjoy your weekend and thanks for the memory.

Jon I think that is the most awesome thing there is I have a grandson also about that age that I took sage rat hunting a few weeks ago and it was one of the best times ever I hope he never forgets it because I know I won't. His dad and I are going to take him again when we both get home from the oil patch in about a week :) :)

I bet your Grandson will have more fun with the hands on instruction than the computer stuff! What young man would not like bullets and shooting!? Good for you Jon!!! ;) :D

Good job Jon! Hope it all works out for you. My 25 year old Son has no interest in reloading, just shooting what I reload! ;D

Have a 30yr old daughter just like that, but i dont mind it gives me quality time with her.

Jon, That is great! Grandkids are sooo much better than the first go around. ;D I started my grand daughter off at an early age. She now loves shooting, hunting, fishing and setting off fireworks.

Way to go Jon.
Must of been grandson night mine is 5 yrs old. He wanted to make the press go last night so i found myself digging in the scrap bucket. He de primed about a dozen cases then he was off to something else.

Not much but it's a start.

I can remember my dad teaching me to reload for the first time. 20 gauge shotshells. I think i reloaded a case of ammo that day. I was fascinated by the mechanical process more than the production of the ammo. That was 26 years ago and im still pressing out more ammo than ill ever shoot. Like the previous posts, a man needs something to build, fix, or break and then fix. Its just in our design as men. Congrats to you and its awesome you've passed something worth while onto him. I promise he'll never forget the expirence.

That's great Jon. I hope he sticks with it.Also I wished I had someone teaching me at that age.It is always good to hear about young people getting into reloading and shooting. good luck!!!

Your a great person Jon. I have ben bless in reverse, along with forward. I was 8 when my mom Divorced. We moved up north to live with my grand parents. It was a big farm house .The house was split into two separate living areas .My Great grand parents lived in the other part. My Great grand father taught me to shoot. He also spent many of hours telling me how to hunt. I remember my first shot. I have the same 22 rifle that I first shot.. It was the first for my 3 kids. Also my 4 grand kids. Next week for my birthday we are taking my great grand son to shoot. If my math is correct it will be 8 generations, shooting the same gun.
Proud Great Grand PAPA on Memorial Day Larry

Congrats and enjoy Jon! Some of my best memories are from when my grandfather introduced me to hunting and fishing. I hope to be passing my experiences eventually down the line as well.

Jon.if you could get your grandson to my part of WY we'll take him p-dog shooting. My grand's have all been. Their 9 and under, good bonding times. Keep the line of communication open.

When I was a young boy my granpa knew I was bit by the bug.He would allow me to clean his highly engraved LC Smith side by side shotgun and get it ready for deer season.I looked forward to doing so every year. When it came time for me to go hunting with him,he got sick and it never happened.I would give up all my stuff for that experience to happen.

Jon Talk to him about a hunter safety course. If the worthless State you live in don't offer it .Ohio or Penn may. Without that he more then likely wont be able to hunt. Our state lets you do the test on line. Then it is only a one day class .Ohio and Penn has a many of gun clubs. If their like ours they would welcome you both to shoot. If you ever get to the central west coast of Florida. I will take my camper to the gun range for you and I will find a Hog for him to shoot . I also have a Grand Son his age for him to have a friend to play with. I Will check if he has to live in the state to take the safety course. I feel their is many other on here that will do the same. God Bless Larry
