H870 or H1000 Loads for 65x284 ?

I need to work up a load for a savage 111 in 65x284 using Berger 130 or 140s. I have seen and herd a lot of guys using retumbo powder with good success. I However have a bunch of H870 and a little H 1000 on hand. According to burn rate charts the 870 is right next to the retumbo powder. I cannot find any data using it in the 65x284. does anyone out there have any leads or ideas?

When I was shooting that cartridge at 1K, I had two go to loads. One with H-4831sc and the other with H-1000. Both were consistent loads with the correct bullet.
I hope this helps,
Lloyd

1SHOT IS ON IT H-4831SC I HAD 2 SAV111 LRH THEY BOTH SHOT VERY WELL W/130 BERGERS 50.5GRS 210M LIGHTS OUT......

My brother used H1000 and 140 gr berger, it was a very consistent load, H870 might be a touch slow, it was a decent .264 win mag powder. work up to about 55 grs . in the 6.5-284 with the H1000 and 140s

You are right on the money .260! I use the 140Hybrid in my 6.5 x 284 with 54.7grs of H1000... My friend on here "smoking-brass" uses 54.8grs of H1000 in his with 140Berger LRBT's... I get 3030f.p.s. and he gets a shade under 3000..

ShootDots is on top of it. I was lucky enough to be picked by Berger to test the 140 Hybrids before they went into production. 54.5 of H-4831-sc held under 1 MOA from 100-1,000 yards! I jumped them as much as .060 and jammed them as much as .040. Shot them out of a 30" 1-8" twist Krieger and never saw a load that I felt was over pressure.
I hope this helps,
Lloyd

I have shot a lot of the H870in the 6.5-06. The 130's used a full case compressed, the 140 some less. H 870 is slow for the 06/284 sized case. You need to work up your loads in your rifle but the case will be near compressed. I may be able to give you starting loads but I am not home now because of Thanksgiving. 870 is dirty powder and does very with lots, it was a surplus 20mm powder that is no longer used. I also shot a lot of it in the 25-06 with 120gr bullets. H1000 is cleaner and better suited to the 6.5-284.

Re: H870 or H1000 Loads for 6.5x284 ?

I shoot H1000 in my two 6.5x284. Each rifle shoots in the .100 5 shot groups. Do not know the fps but the same load and bullet in both rifles different lengths. Load 50.0grs of H1000, 140gr Sierra match kings and Federal match primers.

H870 was a very dirty powder and left lots of fouling when I used it. Would not recommend for that reason, you have too many other better choices.

When you guys are using the H1000 are you switching to a magnum primer? I recall quite a few years ago we did some loading for an over bore 6mm (large rifle primer) that shot well enough with the H1000 but had terrible E\S #'s with the 870 ... Switched to a magnum type primer and after adjusting charge weight it did seem to help some.

I was checking with hodgons burn rate chart...I believe H870 maybe to slow for optimal velocity...not enough case for the slower powders....As shoot dots stated I use H1000
In my 6.5-284 and have great results low es/sd with Fed. 210m primers...140 Berger. If I was going to try H870 I would use a mag. primer and start at 56.0 grains and work up...try to load to get 2900fps.Good luck...let us know the results.

I just worked some loads up in my 6.5x55AI savage which has very similar capacity to the 6.5 - 284

Ran right up to 54 of H1000 (2217 here in Australia) no issues with pressure and looks like a top node between 53.5 and 54.

I use 47.7 Hybrid 100V, 130 Berger VLD hunting, CCI BR2, Lapua brass, .010 jam in my Brux 6.5-284. 2900 ish on the mv.

Ive been using H4831 and it shoots very good, but VV165 kicks its butt. There is also a triple based VV powder that is about the same speed as 165,its one of the VVs in the 500 range. Ive heard its faster with less pressure.
