H870 for 300 Win Mag?

I remember reading of the Bon Ami solution that Hogdon stated only where I live I can't source Bon Ami. I remember Bruce Hogdon stating to use nothing else but Bon Ami as it will not scratch the bore like others do. Has anyone tried this.

Don't know if this will help. As much as we hate them they do a tremendous job of merchandising. And they're international. https://www.amazon.com/s?k=bon+ami&ref=nb_sb_noss_1

A note also calcium carbonate is more soluble in cold water than in hold-one of those odd compounds.

Worked up some loads for it w/ a 212 gr. ELD-X. Just three rounds for three charges. The velocities and spreads were:
78.0 gr. 2555 fps (ES 31)
80.5 gr. 2645 fps (ES 41)
83.0 gr. 2735 fps (ES 22)

I know that it is not smart to draw conclusion on three rounds, but it certainly seems like 80.5 is not where I want to be. Trying to develop an accurate but low power load for this powder. Many advised that this powder will do better with higher charge weights. Did not like loading 83. grains as this is a compressed load.

For my next session, I was going to load 5 rounds at each charge weight and go up by 0.5 grain increments. Question is from what starting weight to what maximum?

BTW, I did not think that the powder was that dirty & actually liked the way it shot. The way I was reading some of the posts here I had visions of low power Unique loads out of my 44 mag.

With your heavy bullet of choice set to just touch the lands, determine 100% fill with the 870. Reduce this by 6 grains, and load duplex load of 6 grain reloader 17, with the 870 load layered on top. My testing determined that 6 grains reloader 17 was the minimum kicker that cleaned up the burn completely. Velocities were on par with typical loads for the bullet choice, in my case 190 gr match kings. Accuracy is tolerable at just under 1 moa. Can tune the 870 portion of the load, but don't want enough air space in case that the 2 powders can mix rather than layer.

I have used this same technique to load 7-08, 243, 22-250 with 870 and 6 grains re17. Best results were achieved in the 300wm, but the others make fine practice loads on the cheap if a little down on velocity

Is there another powder other than rl-17 to use?
