H870 & 300 WinMag

I have 5 lbs. of H870 and have been working up some loads for my 300WM & I must say that I am pleasantly surprised. I loaded up 10 rounds each of a Hornady 212 ELD-X with 82.0 gr., 83.0 gr. & 84.0 gr. Seated bullet to a 2.918" base to ogive length (3.629" COAL). This left me w/ a 0.008"bullet jump. Got the following results:

82.0 gr. ....... 2725..........13.......9.43
83.0 gr...........2766..........20.......8.30
84.0 gr...........2782..........23......12.91

83.0 gr. was slightly compressed, but not much. 84.0 far more compressed than I like. I previously loaded from 78 gr. to 83 gr. & the higher loadings performed better. I will load 10 more at 82.0, 82.5 & 83.0 & settle in on a load. Just hoping to stay in single digit SDs. After picking a load it will be time to build a dope card out to 1000 yds.!

I was also surprised how cool powder was. After 20 rounds the barrel & suppressor were very cool to the touch, as were the ejected cases.

It’s great powder for magnums but unfortunately they done make it anymore but sounds like you have enough to justify using it

Yep. I took it reluctantly (a buddy of mine GAVE it to me). Now I'm thinking that I have a decent powder for just 400 rounds. Trying not to like it too much cause I'll be crying later.

I don’t know this as fact but I think Accurate 8700 is close and H- us869 also is close in burn rate and characteristics

VV 24N41 ,N560 will get You there also . I still use H870 in My 7RM and .338 Mags . My charts are Old and New .

AA 8700 is a hair faster and US869 is slower as a matter of fact slower than H50BMG
The slowest is VV 20N29

Anyone in the Southern Minn. North Iowa, Western Wisconsin area, I have several pounds of H-870 I'd sell very reasonable $23 a pound. I just don't use it anymore.

2,780 fps with 212 gr is a little slow in my opinion (for a 24"-26" barrel). But if accuracy is good I'd be happy.
Your ES is good for a 10 shot string.
