H4831ssc - 22-250 rem 1-8" ?

I am using 80.5 gr Bergers in my 22-250rem 1-8" twist . I have tried IMR4007ssc and Varget . I would appreciate any data using the 80.5 gr or 80 gr bullet using H4831SSC .

I had a 1-8 .22-250 and I tried everything from IMR 4007 to H4831... I had a devil of a time getting just about anything to shoot well in it... I did, however, come to the conclusion that H4831 is probably about the ragged edge of being usable and not too slow.. Even though I was not able to come to some good accuracy with H4350, I believe that either IMR 4007, H4350 OR RL-17 is more in line with being "correct" as far as the proper burn rate "range" is concerned, when 75-80gr bullets are concerned.. But my experience with fast twist / heavy projectiles in the 22-250 extends to just one rifle.. I gave up...

222Rem -

Howdy !

FWIW -

I tried a variety of powders in my .22-35 Rem wildcat ( 28" SS 5-groove 1-8 ). This wildcat has case capacity between that of the stock
.22-250, and a .22-250AI.

I was shooting 75 "A"-Max exclusively, and AA3100 provided the best accuracy w/ vel pretty much as expected. AA3100 out-performed
4831, in my application.

When shooting 55s from a 24" SS 1-14, the .22-35 performed best w/ WW760, and VV160 was in second place ( Fed LR Magnum Match all-around ).

My point:
If you can, you might want to try AA3100, also.

As regards VV560:
Kaltron-Pettibone told me the VV560 was tailored to provide best vel, when heaviest bullets are used.... for a particular caliber.
The 80-90s you have in-mind; would qualify.
I'm inclined to believe K-P.... as trials w/ the .22-35 shooting VV560 and ( lighter ) 55s from the 24" 1-14 yielded vel LOWER than
what was obtained shooting same 55s over VV160. The VV500-series powders come alive when coupled w/ use of heaviest bullets.

Primers -
In the .22-35 ( both barrel lengths ), great accuracy and also highest vel loads for bullets 55-75gr, were obtained using FED LR Magnum Match or CCI LR Mag primers ( depending on particular load ). This was for powders like WW760 / H414, I4350, RL-9, 4831; and AA 3100.

My best load for .22-35 28" 1-8 was: 40.5gr AA3100 and 75 "A"-Max.
Shooting the load w/ Fed LR Magnum Match yeilded 3,500fps honest.
* Switch in load to Fed LR Match yielded 3,420fps along w/ best accuracy. Just the primer switch changed mv 80fps.

I DK if any of that helps ?

With regards,

In a 22-250 using a fast twist and heavy for caliber bullets, 8208 and Varget would be about on the fast side as 7828 and H1000 would be on the slow side... Too fast or too slow will not yield top performance...

H4350 works well in 22-250 and 22-250AI with 75 amax but I have not loaded any 80 grain bullets to know how they work. Buddy use Ramshot big game in his AI and likes it. I thought about trying hybrid 100v but I had such good luck with 4350 that I don't think I could improve.

I use 75 gr A Max in a 22 50 AI and a 22 250, both 8 twist. I am using some H4831 pull down from the early 60's(30 lb of it for 1.50 per lb) works very good in both barrels. Not sure of the burn rate when compared to current production, but this powder I am using is as fresh as if it were made a week ago.

I rebarrelled a Savage LRPV target action with a Shilen select match 30" 1-8 twist barrel in 22-250 I used IMR 4831 (36.5 gr) with an 80gr SMK. It was absolutely great!! A little tedious to load with long grains. 3200 fps mv at 4900 ft altitude using Lapua brass (skimmed neck) and BR2 primers. Was good to 1000 yds. One note however, the barrel was gone by 1200 rounds as far as sub-half minute accuracy was concerned. Load info is for my circumstance--start lower and work up if you try it.

Hello : Appreciate your loads as I have a 1-8" twist 22-250 - rem 700 action Tru Flight barrel medium weight . I am using IMR 4007 SSC and Varget using 80.5 gr Bergers .

When I have my load finalized I will let you know . Have you tried the Hodogons 4831 ssc extreme powder . Do you think there would be much difference from the IMR4831 ? Where I am in Northern Ontario Temperature variance is a main consideration .

When my dies show up, I am going to load up some 90gr Bergers in my new 22-250. H4350, ImR4007, Hybrid 100V, Superformance, Win 780 and even Re25 will get launched just because I have the powder and winter is boring.

Consider using a magnum primer. It will eliminate a lot of variations in load tuning due to temp.

I am in the OK valley and right now, it is cold'ish.

Depending on Bbl length-
IMR 4350/RL-19 burn rate powders in a fast twist(1:8"/1:7.5") 22-250 chambering has worked well in a couple of cut rifled Bbls pushing 75-90gr's in my experience.

Magnum primers aren't required in a case w/ a capacity of <40grains.

My barrel is 27" length and in a standard 22/250 chamber I am using H4831SC shooting the 90 gr. Sierra HPBT. Accuracy is OUTSTANDING!!

Recently I changed over to H4350 and this powder works much better than the SC! Send a PM if you want the starting load!
