H4198 lot numbers - Always the same?

About 2 years ago or so I bought a couple of pounds of H4198 for a 20 Vartarg project. A year later I bought a couple more pounds and it was the same lot number. Woohoo! That's lucky I thought. 6 months ago I found a couple more pounds online so I bought them and....same lot number. That's strange, but what the hey, I'm going with it. So yesterday I'm in a LGS and they had H4198 on the shelf so I snagged a couple and when I got home, you guessed it, same lot number! I don't understand how this can be? All the bottles have the same mfg date and lot number, but were bought over a 2 year period. Is there some secret warehouse somewhere where massive amounts of powder is being stored and then dribbled out a little at a time?

Play MegaBux tonite. I get a 10% commission on yor winnings.

Wonder if lot# just means a single formulation regardless of time manufactured / bottled.

H4198

Would be a powder that is still most likely used by militaries around the world for 5.56 etc. They may have made some huge batches and canned some for civilian use at the same time. Just a guess on my part.

Yeah, I about flipped when I saw it on the shelf.

Lucky. I have some replacement powder (not H4198) that I purchased last year but the lot number is not same as my old one. I found out that I will have to do some tweaking on my load to get it to the same accuracy as the old lot.

And that bug...

please change your avatar kind sir. it bugs me:oops:

I wonder how much 4198 they sell compared to the other choices on the market. Years ago I used it for light bullets in 223 but you rarely hear it mentioned anymore.

I would guess you are looking at the GTIN or CE mark number which identify the product and not the lot number. Like a UPC code

The answer is simple, H4198 appeals to a very, very small number of reloaders. Old stock still sitting in some ware house.

Bean counters have put companies on the 80/20 plan, where 80% of the sales are in 20% of their product. Produce what is selling, less down time on the machines, and less inventory types to handle.

I am curious, aside from the Short Range Score Shooters using it as the “go to” powder in the 30BR, what other popular chambering uses 4198.
