H322 -- What Are Good Similar Powders?

Lucky Shooter

I've found that H322 does a wonderful job in the 222 and 22 PPC------among others .
Seems to available again at much higher prices.

Have other powders come on the scene which are as good or better than H322 for these and
similar rounds ?

Thanks.

A. Weldy

I am in the same boat as you with H322. I have not tried anything else yet as I am not out of my stash of H322. My next try will be one of the VV powders or the one of the Accurate LT choices. Mine is a 6ppc so it may be a different burn rate than what works for you.

I seldom shoot anything but the Sierra 50 Blitz in my .222s because of its accuracy, but I've experimented with many other bullets/weights over the years. According to my notes, I've developed some accurate H322 loads, but I've seen at least somewhat overall better results with Reloder 7 and H4895.

Part of the blame for H4198, H322, H4895, N120, 8208, Benchmark and a few others going up in price and not being as available is due to the rise of Smokeless Muzzleloaders. One pound of powder doesn’t go far in a SML rifle. I burn 105gr of H4895 every trigger pull.

When I first started shooting Short Range Benchrest back in the 1990’s, 322 was the go to powder for those that could not get any T-32 for their 6PPC.

The problem was it varied quite a bit from lot to lot. When VV-133 hit the scene, shooters found it to be much more reliable from lot to lot.

I have not shot 322 in over 25 years. Maybe it’s different now.

I don't know about 22 PPC, but in .222 there are a lot of other good powders, including H335, W748, IMR4895 and good old BL-C(2). It all depends on the pill you use.

When I first built my 16” 223 Striker with a plan to use 80gr. Smk ,H322 and rem 7.5 primers because I had bunch of all that didn’t use anymore. After two range trips load development I get constant 1/2 moa 5 shot groups at 300 yards which is all I need to bang steel. From what I read H322 is best with lighter bullets but it will work good with heavies for me

I built my 1st PPC back in the 80's, and GI-322 was the hot powder, at a whopping 5 bucks a pound. I only bought one jug, figuring it would get me through the 1st barrel, & I'd get another for the 2nd. That plan didn't work out, as the GI was all gobbled up by then.

Then I bought regular H-322, followed shortly by N-201 becoming available in the states, so of course I had to buy a load of that. Turned to be not the hot ticket, not in my gun anyway.

Soon after that, VV-133 came on the scene, & the rest is history....
