H1000&n165 in 243

Ive read a fair few threads that recomend using a slow propellent like h1000 and vit n165 with 90-115 grain bullets in 243, would i be wright in saying that in order for the fairly large charges of slow powder that a 26 inch or longer barrel would be needed to fully ignite the fairly large powder charge, the reason i ask is that i have noticed when using vit n160 which is a faster burning propellent in my 243 24 inch barrel it seems to foul the barrel a lot less than the slower n165, however the es is better with the slower n165, but the barrel tends to foul more, could this be a mixture of natural fouling and small amounts of unburnt powder, im using 46.6g of n160 and ave vl of 3170 49.6 n1645 ave vl 3250 with lapua 90 molly scenars cci bench r lapua brass, has anyone noted same with h1000 in 24 inch barrel, Regards paul T.

Re, joe h, It seems to be mostly heavy black carbon and poss unburnt powder when i use compressed load of n165 in comparisson to n160, Regards paul T.

Paul,

Possibly the use of these powders do produce more black stuff on the patch when you initially clean the barrel. However, I am sure you are not seeing any degradation in group size or velocity due to this.

Don't worry about it.

joe, ive read a few threads where guys with the 243 using slow powders like h1000 and vit n165 are getting lower es by using magnum primers, have you incounterd this, also were the rounds more acurate, id imagine that they would also produce poss less carbon fouling by helping to ignite large volums of slow charges, Regards paul T.
