H-S Precision or McMillan?

Which stock do you guys think is better, a H-S Precision or a McMillan? Im a left handed shooter, would it hurt my accuracy to shoot with a right hand stock? nobody has ever said anything to me about it at the range. Im also probably going to be using my rifle for varmit hunting, my grandparents own a house in Montana, so i plan on using it for competition and varmit hunting. Im thinking of a McMillan A-5 Stock witha Trued Remington 700 action pillar bedded, Hart 6mmBR Barrel, Night Force 12-42x56, with a Harris Bipod. This sound like a good setup? I went to Bryant Custom's websight, it looks like this is goin to cost me about $3,264. Is this just what accuracy costs, or could i mabey get into it a lilttle cheaper. Im 16 and on a serious budget, and my dad thinks its totally insane to spend that kind of money on a rifle, so I'm on my own fund- wise.

First, your Dad may be right. Most people work up to a high-end rifle. Nothing wrong with a trued Rem 700 action. But you're investing some heavy cash in the optics. If you truly want/need a custom at this stage in your life,as opposed to a Savage 12BVSS or other decent factory rifle), here's a set-up we would consider: Viper drop port,$950 w triggerguard), Shehane Tracker or Richards Custom's #001 or #008 Rutland Laminate stock,$300), Broughton, Krieger, Hart or Spencer Barrel,$280), Pillar bedding and chambering,$300-$350). That gets you to $1830 before trigger and optics. A Sightron 6-24 and Burris Signature Rings will do the job for $350. So that puts you at about $2250 with a really nice action. You might also consider a Barnard action, which is about $1000 including a nice trigger. We're not sure if they are available left-handed.

Re the left vs. right-handed thing, you'll probably shoot better with a left-handed stock. But another factor is your eye dominance. You may be "right-eyed" which means it will be easier to shoot a rifle right-handed. To check eye dominance, make the "OK" sign with one hand. Hold that about 2' in front of your face and look at an object about 10' away, centering it. Without moving your hand, view it with left eye only, then right eye only. The image that matches what you see with both eyes is you dominant eye. If you ever take up trap or skeet you will have a much easier time using your dominant eye, what ever that is.

I was just looking at a Savage 12BVSS, they are really affordable, i'm going to look into getting one in .243 and making it a project rifle. Thanks for the help.

The 12BVSS is a very solid unit, with a decent stock. Do inspect the barrel before you buy. Many of them have really prominent tooling marks, while others aren't bad. Either way, with a little bedding work, it should make a good varminter. You might also consider getting it in .223 if you're not set up for reloading at this time. The .223 bolt-head can be swapped out for a .308 sized bolt head,to fit 6BR or .243) at low cost at a later time. Everyone should have a nice .223 in their inventory.

Im defenatly not equpied for reloading, i know nothing about it, however, i would like to lean how to do it. im the only one really interested in shooting in my family,my dad used to shoot handguns in police competitions but he never loaded his own ammo, he had some friend that do it for him, but hes dead now, and my dad just buys factory ammo now) so i dont really know of anybody to teach me how, ill just watch the forums and see if i can get info from these, yall are real helpfull. I think i might take your advise lynn, make myself a project rifle. I'm lookin at gettin into F-Class shooting, so this might change everything, if this sounds like a good setup, im gonna find a gunsmith soon, I went to the bank yesterday, and all i need is 200 more bucks before i got 3000 bucks. For the time being, ill just buy factory ammo.

Stiller Viper Action
Richards Custom #008 Stock
Shillen Benchrest Special #10 Contour .243 Win 1:8 Twist
Jewel Trigger

I havent decided for sure on a scope, but most likely its goin to be a leupold like lynn said.

Lemme know if this sounds like a good set up.

Thanks again for all the help!

Edit: i was just lookin around and found this 6x47 SM Sweedish Match round, the swiss shooting team uses it for 300m matches, anybody think this might be a good 1000 yard F-class round? shoots a 105 grain bullet at 3000 FPS, sounds sort of impressive. They make factory loaded ammo for it too, plus brass is supposed to be really good:)
