Gurus

I have only been on this site for less than a year and of the other forums I'm on accurate shooter is #1. The people here are more mature and won't bash you over a newbie question . Like others have said, if a member gives bad info then other members will correct them swiftly . This is the forum that other shooting forums strive to be .

Jalen, I love your question. It's one I may have asked a few years ago if I had the nerve. I had been shooting short range BR for a number of years before the internet came into my life. My area of expertise is limited to short range BR because that is where I've immersed myself and my money. I don't pretend to know much about Varmint shooting at great distances because, quite frankly, I've never done that. Don't look at the number of post someone has made and assume they know everything on the subject of which which they speak. One particular heavy poster has posted a number of things retracting mistakes he has been called on. "I meant to say .005 instead of 0.5" doesn't cut it if you've loaded a few rounds and pulled the trigger on a mistake before the retraction has been posted.
So, my answer would be to ask much, read much, and sift much. And yes, sift my posts too.

1. Always pay attn. to the guy you get the feeling did his own testing, and speaks from experience rather than what he has read, been told, or overheard.
1a. Fine line here, grain of salt for the guy who posts test results with "this is it, period". For he ran a test just to prove himself right for the time being.
2. Always pay attn. to a guy you seek knowledge from and he tells you he does not know< whether he tells you he will find an answer or not, now you know he is honest.
3. I always stay away from people trying to make a quick name for themselves in the firearm community,< throw shit at the wall hoping some will stick. We know who did it right w/o stepping on the toes of others.
4. Boils down to just being somewhat savoy.

I came here 7 yrs ago with the prospect of becoming a top shelf reloader. 6 months in it became apparent some was over my head, and no way did I need or want to take it to those levels. I'll never be a benchrest shooter, the interest is not here.
I already knew consistency the key, same lot of powder, bullets, brass etc. I have picked up tips on annealing, neck tensions and more goodies and I believe my ammo has improved, not to the point I want to shoot it against a good majority of people on here at paper targets.

Good post

Who on this forum do you absolutely put your full faith in when your unsure or looking for help? This thread is NOT meant to bash anyone at all. There’s a lot of guys on here with a lot of different perspectives which is fine and interesting. But for a new guy like myself its really hard to weed through who is on point and who isn’t.

There are many. Those that come to mind are Bart Sauter, Dusty Stevens, Jim Borden, Alex Wheeler, R.G. Robinette, and Boyd Allen. There are many more, but I have found that these men give sound advice that has been proven in competition. Good shooting...James

I'll add another to that list. Al Mattson (alinwa) posts here occasionally. Al has some unorthodox practices, but I have found that he always knows what he's talking about. If he says it's so, it's so. That's because unlike keyboard shooters, if he says it he's done it.

This site, like snipershide, I look at a general consensus of posters. For an example, before I started with a 338 Lapua, and to save $$ on components, time, and my shoulder, I reviewed several go-tom loads that were being suggested. I tried it, and it worked. And it also worked in a second 338 I started to work on.
I don't compete, or go long range. I primarily hand load and shoot coyotes. For me, AckleymanII has helped me out for my particular improvements more than most. His suggested loads and bullet performance are usually spot-on, for me.
I recently had a problem with bullets sticking in my barrels, and even though not loaded tight up against the lands. Many posters suggested it was a carbon ring. And they were right!
Everyone has their specialty. I recently made a ginormous equipment change, (For Me, 28 years running), going from Leupold to Nightforce. The general feeling was that night force holds their zero better, and adjusts when they are adjusted. Everyday I learn something here on this site. This is My extreme happy-place!
Like one poster said: 'If he said that Easter was going to be tomorrow, I would go right to the kitchen and start boiling eggs!' :)

In simple terms, there is data and there is information. Simply consider all of the stuff on here as data that you have to filter into information.

I would also suggest critically evaluating what the poster is doing with the data provided. Some things, I've learned, work better in certain situations or disciplines, than others.

I would have to add brians356 (wrong! Correct member name is bsl135, thanks Ringostar) (Brian Litz) to the top of the list since I didn’t see him mentioned — certainly an authoritative source on exterior ballistics and great credentials as a long range shooter and a coach, as well as a consultant to the armed forces, and his company Applied Ballistics is a sponsor to the forum also. Brian does a lot that helps all of us interested in the longer range stuff.

I agree with whoever said they listen to the people who did their own tests, but if you’ve read much of Brian’s stuff he gives a lot of examples of bad science. Just remember that all tests that you hear about may not be valid for various reasons. Sometimes tests are biased to prove the answer that someone wants to hear. I’m also quite willing to pay attention when someone answers a question with some information they read in a source if they tell me where they read it so I can go read the original article to help me understand and form my own opinion. I ignore the posts that say basically, “you don’t need to worry about that because I don’t worry about it” especially when some of the guys from the “likes” HOF wrote me offline to say “yeah, it’s important ...”.

I also give kudos to Fatboy (Chris) as one of the lead riders in the “no bullshit allowed” posse. He’s relentless.

Alinwa is quite entertaining also. I read his posts even when I'm not interested in the topic. Don't see him around here much anymore.

Great info available here - skilled real world (class) shooters and machinists kind enough to contribute their knowledge. Thank you.

I stumbled on this site maybe 12 years ago, had a 6BR built, used the load data "here" and shot a first ever group that blew me away. I had never ever seen a micrometer before.

The search function here is a valuable powerful learning tool. It's a textbook, really; with a broad source of differing opinions, that often lead to the same general (corroborated by some very learned individuals) conclusion.
