Gunsmith shipping back your rifle

Hi-NV Shooter

Gold $$ Contributor
I know if you don't have an FFL UPS requires you to ship your gun through an FFL. so, my question if you do this and it is to a gunsmith when it is ready can the smith ship it back to you directly?
I am asking because I know the FFL used to ship the gun will log it in.

Thanks,
Lee

If you use an FFL to ship to the smith, the the smith needs to send it back to that FFL.

If it's a rifle, then use USPS.

If it's a handgun, then maybe the smith can send you a pre paid label to ship it to them using their license.

Thanks for the replies USPS is not an option for me
Even if it was I wouldn’t use them. They lost a package that went through Customs and even after US Postal inspectors investigated after 5+ months sorry was all I got

Federal law says that you may ship your gun direct to a licensed gunsmith for repair (or factory) and he can send it back to you without going thru another ffl. People who work for the various shipping company's don't always know the law and can cause lots of problems. It would probably be good to have a copy of your gunsmith's ffl when shipping it to him. UPS and Fedex's company policy is a whole different matter and because of this I would highly recommend using USPS. They all have lost guns and reneged on insurance, but it is all we have.

As I mentioned USPS is not an option. too many Cali transfers here and they refused to accept shipment.

But my question is about having it shipped back. since it will be logged in with my FFL and shipped by them, will the gunsmith be obligated to ship back to the same FFL or could they ship it back to me.

Pretty sure if you ship from an ffl then the gunsmith is required to return ship to that same ffl. Your gunsmith will tell you for sure how they plan to handle it.

Thanks, I kind of thought that may be the case. but only the smith could really tell.

Lee,
FWIW USPS can no doubt be iffy, BUT, two good options that I’ve used with my FFL, Priority mail has been quite effective with insurance rates well below UPS/Fedex.
The absolute safest way to ship a gun of value is USPS registered/insured.Every single human that touches it must sign for it. Only PIA is that it requires brown paper with brown packing tape.
It is often preferred shipping very high dollar firearms.
my shooting buddy/FFL has used priority exclusively for a couple years without issue, has stuff in/out weekly.

I recently went through this and was surprised with what happened. I bought an action which was shipped to my FFL. A 4473 was filed. I then shipped it to a builder for barrel fitting and ignition tuning. About 3 months later it was time to ship it back. The smith was going to send it USPS but I said that my mail service was a little sketchy, especially since it would require a signature. He said he could send it UPS but it would have to go to an FFL. No problem, he’s 3 miles away. When I went to pick it up he said he would have to do another 4473 since it was over 30 days since the last one. I think he knows his regs., he is a manufacturer. So I did it again

shipmygun.com will solve your problems, but most of you would rather argue about it or tell everyone it couldn't work, even though you've NEVER used it

Just look up the regs for shipping firearms through the mail.
When they refuse, tell 'em what you found and ask them to check the regs. As an employee of the USPS, it's not their choice.
Yes, I know about what they are supposed to do. I tried before with printed out section on the Regs. they will not accept it. after my experience with the law enforcement division of USPS (US Postal Inspectors) I understand now why they can do what they please at any local PO.

Thanks, again for all the replies. I will deal with it when I have to.
