gunsmith dilima

Guys im going to build my first 6ppc and was hoping to get some good advice from all you experienced benchrest shooters on who should do my gunsmithing. I currently have 3names so far.....bob brackney, dan dowling, lester bruno.....can someone give me some info on each. These are names from the internet. I must confess im new to the benchrest arena

I, too, am from LA and I use Billy Stevens for a gunsmith. The men you mentioned are all good choices. Another option is to use one closer to home. Hall of Fame member Don Geraci lives in Independence, LA (near Hammond) and does good work. Bob Brackney was Don's gunsmith back in the day when he was terrorizing the BR world. Don Geraci's phone number is (985) 878-6113. Good Shooting...James Mock

i would give a thumb's up to billy stevens as well. check out his website. I had a hunting rifle he built in a 308. boy it would flat out shoot. I know that is a far cry from a benchrest rifle type of gun, but it would shoot with some of the other benchrest rifles I have had. another smith, who isn't close to you is clay spencer up here in va. but I agree with the last post, try to stay closer to home. it is much easier to drive a few hours than to discuss over the phone, email, etc.

Where are you?

If anywhere in the north east, I suggest you contact Carl Bernosky.

He's an extraordinary gunsmith, a wonderful fellow to do business with AND an exceptional shooter in multiple disciplines. http://www.carlbernosky.com/

Even if you do nothing but ask his interest and he declines the work, I'm confident he can redirect you to several capable, reputable gunsmiths who may be better equipped for a BR-type rifle project.

Jim Borden in Springville,Pa.
I don't care were a gunsmith is located personaly as long as the work is good.I know some shooters who would never ship a rifle.

I'm having Borden do the metalwork, then shipping that to Bernosky for the stockwork/pillar bedding. I had the stock built by Precision Rifle and Tool in NC. I plan to put my experience in as a gun of the week as soon as it is complete.

Look no further: http://www.stevensaccuracy.com/html/benchrest.html
Billy's built two for me, a 6PPC and a 30BR.

Regardless of who you use, pick a smith who also competes ... and wins too!

Guys thanks for all the good advice. Im considering building me a play gun also in a ppc. Thinking about a bat action. Should i do it in a br or ppc??

If you've done BR stuff before, PPC would be my choice for 200 yards & under. Otherwise the BR will give you more flexibility if you want to get out to 300 yards or farther.

With a .475" bolt face you can have another barrel chambered for PPC later on if you want (it does work but a second bolt would be recommended should you find yourself shooting PPC a lot) unlike limitation imposed by a .440" PPC bolt face.

If you want to shoot all distances and all disciplines then the 6mm BR is the best choice ...get a Kelbly action RB-LP-RE with an 8 twist bbl...have Kelblys do the work and you will have it quiker and their work is 2nd to NONE...Roger
