Gunsmith chambering my rifle asked what brass i shoot Norma or Lupua ? Why would that make a difference

Loaded neck diameters may have enough difference to cause clearance issues.

I believe you passed up your best chance of answering that questions when you did not ask your gunsmith if he had two different reamers, or 3 or 4. I have 64 reamers, not one of them is case manufacturer specific.

Many custom reamers are brass specific.

lapua brass and norma brass have different neck dia on the 6.5x284 case. your gunsmith may seem to be asking stupid questions but looks to me to be one of those "been there, done that" kinda guy that has real world experience.

I would not make excuses on behalf of the smith, he could have said "The reason I ask is because the 6.5mm284 has 4 options when it comes to chamber dimensions".

The difference could be swelled cases just above the extractor groove or not.

Lapua brass is thicker at the neck than Norma, I'm sure he wanted to make sure you had enough clearance without it being necessary to turn necks.
