Gunbroker/Zelle hacks

We also recommend that all sellers here immediately use a UNIQUE PASSWORD for this site, with two-step verification.

Recently an upgraded member, who used the same password on other Forums, had his accounts here hacked. The bad guys modified old ads and ripped people off in less than an hour.

The most secure passwords are not using common words like Hunter1234 or PRSshooter55. These can be hacked more easily with hacking software. Create a password something like this:

d7$Ezz4?1aB$!R9

Very difficult to hack.

How do us old guys suppose to remember that? We still use something like this 1234password
I am 75 and keep a small spiral note pad with screen names and passwords, I keep it secure so I can use complicated passwor and have not had any security issues. I also use a VPN quite a bit.
when we travel my IPad has its own phone number so I never have to worry about using unsecured wifi at places like McDonalds. Just lengths you have to utilize in todays electronic age.

DO NOT leave your bank information on Gunbroker. Zelle hackers are using that site's information to hack your bank account to solicit payments to them. GB is not a secure site!!!!!!!!!!!
Some folks must have used the same password for GB and their bank. My bank employs two-step verification, a text to my phone, but not until this year, long overdue.

v3ryD1$$2H@k!?

Take only a four-word phrase, shorten some words, capitalize some words, substitute some numerals and characters for letters, add some trailing characters. A password built like this is relatively easy to remember, if you recall the phrase. To lenghthen, wedge in a couple of numeral pairs you'll remember, like the year you graduated HS, your favorite ballplayer's number:

To add to Forum Boss’s comment, all members should make it a habit to change their passwords at some regular interval.
Also, if you can, use complex phrases rather than single words.
Length of the password is the most important factor in how long it would take to crack it.
We’ve avoided using 2 factor auth because it can get annoying but if the hacks keep up, we’ll have to rethink on that.

Right now I almost never log in because this site keeps me logged in across sessions on the same device (cookie?) If you go to 2 factor will that be impossible, and we'll have to log in every session?

Remember that part of your brain that used to remember all the phone numbers that your phone now remembers? It’s still there….

Writing down helps. Then trying to enter from memory re enforces. Doesn’t matter if you mess up. Keep at it and pretty soon you’ll be remembering those 16 character passwords. Especially if you use them several times a week.

By the way…. You might want to actually write down all those phone numbers you let the phone remember. Just in case.

Same here.

Also, change complex passwords @ least once a month.

My password safe has 188 passwords in just the Misc folder. Heck, there are 26 entries in just the Restaurant folder. There's no way I'm going to remember them all, and definitely not if I'm changing them with any frequency. How am I going to remember a 16 character password I may have used at Zenni Optical 13 months ago - and it was unique to that site? Not going to happen.

This doesn't even account for the ones my wife has that I could need if something happens to her. We both keep them in the password safe.

Writing them down is fine, until that paper is lost or stolen or damaged with the drink you keep next to it.

And, change them once a month? I'd have to hire a helper to change 300+ passwords once a month.

This is what I have on my phone. I can access my account from any device, even if it isn't mine.
I probably have at least 80 passwords with different user names.

All I need to remember is onecomplex password to login and get access to the rest.
