Gun Ugly but shoots great -- What to do??

Cover it with stickers (seems to be the thing to do in my area. Even with guns that have yet to be shot.)

Oh, and make sure you wear some sort of shooting brand themed clothing when you go to the range. That'll help you shoot better.

I have a buddy who wanted a long range rifle, and bought a barreled Bergara action in 300WinMag. Put it in an MDT chassis. About a month after, he painted the entire chassis white. I didn't notice a change in group size, but I guess it helped him.

[Yes, that's all sarcasm. Except for the buddy part.]

The AR has become the poster child for silly, it's mutated into a 16 pound laughing stock of a combat rifle shot by someone in a silly outfit that needs a force multiplier to hit anything.

I love craftsmanship, wonderful workmanship, wood crafted by an artesian, I love wooden boats, (now that's not practical). I wear, jeans, t-shirts, work boots, flannel, (what ever is on sale) and in the past ghillie suits.

If a person wants a beautiful firearm God bless them, I have a beautiful family and no one complains.

just me possibly but there is a ton of satisfaction when you win the match after having been looked down on because you don't have the latest and greatest cartridge, stock, scope, rest, whatever. Pretty is pleasing to look at but skill wins matches. Jim

I won trap tournaments with a field grade 870 Remington Wingmaster. Second place shot a Perazzi.

I have a policy that I've followed for a long time. That is, "When you get one that shoots like that, don't even wipe the dust off of it." I've seen more than one BR rifle that was unglued from the stock for painting that never shot worth a crap after it was glued back in. Likewise, seen a few that had the barrels pulled for a recrown, or setback, that never were competitive again.

Don’t touch it. Treat it like a child that isn’t acting up. Hope that it doesn’t catch word of you calling it ugly.

I have a 6BR with a fairly gaudy, laminated stock. My younger daughter said it was the ugliest rifle she ever saw. Told her that was ok, she didn't have to shoot it.

Here's something to chew on.

My best friend got back from a Colorado Elk hunt a few weeks ago. He shot a 5x4 at 176 yards, the only one in the camp to get one. Probably because he was the only one to go on a stalk and spot hunt in rough snow-covered terrain.

He used his very old vintage level action 308. All the finish is worn off the stock, ugly as sin, a lot of the bluing has worn off due to over 50 years of field use hunting deer and bear in the big wood of central PA. Incidentally, he has gotten three PA black bears over his hunting career which spans over 50 years.

The guys in the Elk camp had $1000+ rifles with $1000+ scopes. His rifle shot good enough, but it was his hunting skills that trumped the equipment.

I read story on one of my prepper forms about a guy the was invited by his boss to duck hunt with the bosses friends on a lease that was big bucks. He showed up with a Marlin bolt action 12 gauge and he said he heard some snickers when he walked up to the group with it. When the hunt was over, he had a limit and no one else killed a duck.

Yeah Brett doesn't to my knowledge have paperwork to keep a whole rifle with him and I will not unglue it, while it still shoots. I know very little about bench manners but I have with this gun shot several 5 shoot groups in the zeros. I am not sure who the smith is that put it together but it has an aluminum bore guide that clips to the bolt latch that came with it. i thought I would see who made it and get more 1 for a short action Remington and 1 for long action Remington. It is stamped Selley Masker so I don't think i will find anymore. It came with a Krieger barrel that was supposed to have about 300 rounds through it and I ve shot about 200, so one day it will need a barrel, and i guess then it will get unglued and screwed and maybe I can get Brett to do Hawaiian camo on it.

Beating people with an ugly gun really is fun and satisfying. Keep old ugly shooting. C a n always paint when the barrel needs changed, or not.
